Telangana Restores Utnoor Fort in Attempt to Preserve Gond Heritage

HYDERABAD: Telangana is restoring the historic Utnoor Fort in Adilabad district under a Rs 3.9-crore project aimed at conserving the structure while developing it as a destination showcasing the history, traditions and cultural heritage of the Gond community.
The restoration is being jointly implemented by the state's Archaeology authorities and the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA), Utnoor, according to The New Indian Express. Officials have said conservation work will be undertaken without compromising the fort's historic character.
The project goes beyond structural repairs. Plans being developed for the nearly 15-acre fort complex include a museum devoted to Gond history and culture, architectural lighting, landscaping, a children's play area and open spaces that could host cultural and community programs.
Adilabad District Collector Rajarshi Shah and ITDA Utnoor Project Officer Manda Makarand inspected the ongoing works and directed officials to prepare proposals for a museum documenting the Gond kingdom, its rulers and the region's tribal heritage.
The initiative is particularly significant in the predominantly tribal northern Telangana region, where Gond history remains an important part of local cultural identity.
The current project is not Telangana's first attempt to revive the fort. As far back as 2017, the state Tourism Department was reported to be planning development of Utnoor Fort as a tourism destination.
In August, Telangana invited private participation for the proposed redevelopment and management of 11 historic forts, including Utnoor. The public-private partnership proposal calls for heritage-compatible tourism and adaptive reuse.
For Telugu readers in the United States, the Utnoor project highlights a part of Telangana's history that receives less international attention than Hyderabad's monuments or the Kakatiya heritage of Warangal. Its significance lies not only in saving an old fort, but in whether restoration can preserve and interpret the history of the Gond communities whose heritage is closely connected with northern Telangana.
