శ్రీ రాముని దయచేతను
నారూఢిగ సకల జనులు నౌరా యనగా
ధారాళమైన నీతులు
నోరూరగ జవులు పుట్ట నుడివెద సుమతీ
భావం: మంచి బుధ్ధిగలవాడా! శ్రీరాముని యొక్క దయవలన నిశ్చయముగా అందరు జనులను ఔరా అనునట్లుగా నోటినుండి నీళ్ళూరునట్లుగా రసములు పుట్టగా న్యాయమును భోధించు నీతులను చెప్పెదన్.
English Translation: O person of noble intellect! By the grace of Lord Sri Rama, I shall narrate moral teachings that expound righteousness, so delightful that people will marvel and find their mouths watering with literary sweetness.

అక్కరకు రాని చుట్టము,
మ్రొక్కిన వరమీని వేల్పు, మోహరమున దా
నెక్కిన బారని గుర్రము
గ్రక్కున విడవంగవలయు గదరా సుమతీ
భావం: అవసరమునకు పనికిరాని చుట్టమును, నమస్కరించి వేడిననూ కోరిక నెఱవేర్చని భగవంతుని, యుద్ధసమయమున ఎక్కినప్పుడు ముందుకు పరుగు తీయని గుఱ్ఱమును వెంటనే విడిచిపెట్టవలయును.
English Translation: A relative who is of no help in times of need, a deity who grants no boon despite devotion, and a warhorse that does not charge forward into the battlefield—all three must be abandoned immediately.

అడిగిన జీతంబియ్యని
మిడిమేలుపు దొరను గొల్చి మిడుకుట కంటెన్‌
వడిగల యెద్దుల గట్టుక
మడి దున్నుకు బ్రతుక వచ్చు మహిలో సుమతీ
భావం: అడిగినప్పుడు జీతము ఇవ్వని యజమానిని సేవించి జీవించుటకంటే, వేగముగా పోగల ఎద్దులను కట్టుకొని పొలమును దున్ని బ్రతకవచ్చు.
English Translation: Rather than toiling under an arrogant master who fails to pay wages upon request, it is far better to harness sturdy oxen and live honorably by tilling the land.

అడియాస కొలువు గొలువకు,
గుడి మణియము సేయబోకు, కుజనుల తోడన్‌
విడువక కూరిమి సేయకు,
మడవిని దో డరయ కొంటి నరుగకు సుమతీ
భావం: వృధా ప్రయాసయగు సేవను చేయకుము. గుడి ధర్మకర్తుత్వము చేయకుము. చెడ్డవారితో స్నేహము చేయకుము. అడవిలో సహాయము లేక ఒంటరిగా పోకుము.
English Translation: Do not serve where expectations are vain, do not undertake the administration of a temple, never cultivate companionship with wicked people, and never traverse a forest alone without a companion.

అధరము గదలియు, గదలక
మధురములగు భాష లుడుగి మౌన వ్రతుడౌ
అధికార రోగ పూరిత
బధిరాంధక శవము జూడ బాపము సుమతీ
భావం: పెదవి కదలీకదలకుండ తీయనైన మాటలు మాని, మాటలాడనను నియమము పూని, అధికార వ్యాధిచేనిండిన చెవిటి గ్రుడ్డి పీనుగును చూచుట పాపము.
English Translation: It is a sin even to look upon a person drunk with the intoxication of power—one who, barely moving their lips, speaks no kind word and remains mute like a blind, deaf corpse.

అప్పు కొని చేయు విభవము,
ముప్పున బ్రాయంపుటాలు, మూర్ఖుని తపమున్‌,
దప్పరయని నృపు రాజ్యము
దెప్పరమై మీద గీడు దెచ్చుర సుమతీ
భావం: ఋణము దెచ్చుకొని అనుభవించు సౌఖ్యము, ముసలితనమందు పడుచు భార్య, తప్పిదములను కనిపెట్టని రాజు యొక్క రాజ్యము సహింపరానిదై చివరకు హానిని తెచ్చిపెట్టును.
English Translation: Luxury indulged in through borrowed money, a youthful wife taken in extreme old age, the penance of a fool, and the reign of a king who cannot discern flaws will ultimately bring unbearable ruin.

అప్పిచ్చువాడు, వైద్యుడు
నెప్పుడు నెడతెగక పారు నేరును, ద్విజుడున్‌
జొప్పడిన యూర నుండుము
చొప్పడకున్నట్టి యూరు చొరకుము సుమతీ
భావం: ఋణమునిచ్చువాడును, వైద్యుడును, ఎల్లప్పుడును ఆగకుండా ప్రవహించు నదియును, బ్రాహ్మణుడుగల గ్రామమునందు నివసింపుము. వారు లేనట్టి గ్రామమునందు నివసింపకుము.
English Translation: Live only in a settlement that has a money lender, a physician, a perennial river, and a learned scholar. Never reside where these are absent.

అల్లుని మంచితనంబును,
కాపు సాహిత్య విద్య, కోమలి నిజమున్‌,
బొల్లున దంచిన బియ్యము,
దెల్లని కాకులును లేవు తెలియుము సుమతీ
భావం: అల్లుని మంచితనమును, కాపువాని పాండిత్య జ్ఞానమును, ఆడుదానియందు నిజమును, పొల్లు ధాన్యములో బియ్యమును, తెల్లని రంగు కాకులును లోకములో నుండవు.
English Translation: The benevolence of a son-in-law, scholarly wisdom in an unlettered peasant, truthfulness in a deceitful woman, grain inside chaff, and white crows do not exist in this world.

ఆకొన్న కూడె యమృతము,
తాకొందక నిచ్చువాడె దాత ధరిత్రిన్‌,
సోకోర్చువాడె మనుజుడు,
తేకువ గలవాడె వంశ తిలకుడు సుమతీ
భావం: లోకమునందు ఆకలి సమయమున అన్నమే అమృతము. బాధ నొందకుండా నిచ్చువాడే దాత. ఆవేశమును ఓర్చుకొనువాడే మానవుడు. ధైర్యం కలవాడే వంశ శ్రేష్టుడు.
English Translation: Food given at the height of hunger is nectar itself; he who gives without hesitation is a true donor; he who endures adversity with patience is a true man; and one endowed with fortitude is the crown jewel of their lineage.

ఆకలి యుడుగని కడుపును,
వేకటియగు లంజ పడుపు విడువని బ్రతుకున్‌,
బ్రాకొన్న నూతి యుదకము,
మేకల పాడియును రోత మేదిని సుమతీ
భావం: భూమియందు ఆకలి తీరని భోజనం, గర్భము వచ్చిన జారస్త్రీ యొక్క వ్యభిచారమును విడువని బ్రతుకును, పాచిపట్టిన బావి నీళ్ళును, మేకల పాడియు రోత పుట్టించును.
English Translation: A stomach whose hunger is never sated, a pregnant courtesan clinging to her trade, mossy well water, and the yield of goat's milk evoke only revulsion in this world.

ఇచ్చునదె విద్య, రణమున
జొచ్చునదే మగతనంబు, సుకవీశ్వరులున్‌
మెచ్చునదే నేర్చు, వదుకు
వచ్చునదే కీడు సుమ్ము వసుధను సుమతీ
భావం: భూమియందు ధనము నొసగునదియే విద్య. యుద్ధభూమియందు ప్రవేశించునదే పౌరుషము. మంచి కవిశ్రేష్టులు మెచ్చుకున్నట్టిదే నేర్పరితనము. తగవునకు వచ్చునదియే హాని.
English Translation: That which earns wealth and livelihood is true learning; entering the battlefield is true valor; what eminent poets admire is true mastery; and that which leads to contention is true ruin.

ఇమ్ముగ జదువని నోరును,
నమ్మా యని బిలిచి యన్న మడుగని నోరున్‌,
దమ్ముల బిలువని నోరును
గుమ్మరి మను ద్రవ్వినట్టి గుంటర సుమతీ
భావం: ఇంపుగా పఠింపని నోరును, అమ్మయని పిలచి అన్నము అడుగనినోరును, తమ్ముడాయని పిలువని నోరును, కుమ్మరివాడు మన్నుత్రవ్విన గోయీవంటిది సుమా.
English Translation: A mouth that does not recite melodiously, that does not call out 'Mother' asking for food, and that does not address younger siblings with affection is akin to a ditch dug by a potter for clay.

ఉడుముండదె నూరేండ్లును,
బడియుండదె పేర్మి బాము పదినూరేండ్లున్‌,
మడువున గొక్కెర యుండదె,
కడు నిల బురుషార్థ పరుడు గావలె సుమతీ
భావం: ఉడుము నూరేండ్లును, పాము పదివందల ఏండ్లును, కొంగ చెరువులో చిరకాలము జీవించుచున్నవి. వాని జీవితములన్నియు నిరుపయోగములు. మానవుని జీవిత మట్టిదికాక ధర్మార్ధకామ మోక్షాసక్తితో కూడినది కావలెను.
English Translation: Does not an iguana survive for a century? Does not a great serpent linger for a thousand years? Does not a crane endure long in a lake? Their lives are of no merit. A human life must be purposeful, pursuing righteousness, prosperity, desire, and liberation.

ఉత్తమగుణములు నీచున
కెత్తెఱగున గలుగ నేర్చు; నెయ్యెడలం దా
నెత్తిచ్చి కరగి పోసిన
నిత్తడి బంగారమగునె యిలలో సుమతీ?
భావం: బంగారమునకు సమానమైన యెత్తు ఇత్తడిని తీసుకొని ఎన్నిసార్లు కరగించి పోసినను బంగారము ఎట్లు కానేరదో అదేవిధముగా లోకములో నీచునకు ఎక్కడను ఏవిధముగను మంచి గుణములు కలుగనేరవు.
English Translation: How can noble virtues ever take root in a vile person? No matter how many times brass is melted and cast in equal weight, it can never turn into gold.

ఉదకము ద్రావెడు హయమును,
మదమున నుప్పొంగుచుండు మత్తేభంబున్‌,
మొదవు కడ నున్న వృషభము,
జదువని యానీచు గడకు జనకుర సుమతీ
భావం: నీరు త్రాగెడు గుఱ్ఱము కడకును, క్రొవ్వుచే విజృంబించు మదపుటేనుగుకడకును, ఆవుకడనున్న ఆబోతు దగ్గరకును, విద్య నేర్వని అల్పుని కడకును వెళ్ళకుము.
English Translation: Never approach a horse drinking water, an elephant in rut swelling with frenzy, a breeding bull near a cow, or an uneducated, wicked person.

ఉపకారికి నుపకారము
విపరీతము గాదు సేయ వివరింపంగా;
అపకారికి నుపకారము
నెపమెన్నక సేయువాడు నేర్పరి సుమతీ
భావం: మేలు చేసినవానికి తిరిగి మేలు చేయుట గొప్ప కాదు. హాని చేసిన వానికి లోగడ వాడు చేసిన దోషములు లెక్క చేయక ఉపకారము చేయువాడే నేర్పుగలవాడు.
English Translation: Returning a favor to one who has helped you is nothing extraordinary. True wisdom lies in doing good even to one who has harmed you, overlooking their past transgressions.

ఉపమింప మొదలు తియ్యన
కపటం బెడనెడను జెఱకు కై వడినే పో
నెపములు వెదకును గడపట
గపటపు దుర్జాతి పొందు గదరా సుమతీ
భావం: చెఱకుగడ మొట్టమొదట తియ్యగానుండి, చివరకు పోయిన కొలది మధ్య మధ్య చప్పగా నేవిధమున నుండునో ఆ విధముగా పోల్చి చూడగా మోసగాడైన దుర్మార్గునితోడి స్నేహము మొదట ఇంపుగా నున్నను చివరకు తప్పులను వెదకుటకు ప్రారంభించునుగదా.
English Translation: Just as sugarcane tastes sweet at the base but turns bland toward the tip, friendship with a deceitful person feels delightful at first, but ends in fault-finding and malice.

ఎప్పటి కెయ్యది ప్రస్తుత
మప్పటికా మాటలాడి, యన్యుల మనముల్‌
నొప్పించక, తా నొవ్వక,
తప్పించుక తిరుగువాడు ధన్యుడు సుమతీ
భావం: ఏ సమయమునకు ఏదేది అవసరమో తెలుసుకొని, అప్పటికా మాటలు పల్కి ఇతరుల మనస్సులను బాధపెట్టక తాను బాధనుపడక తప్పించుకొని తిరుగువాడే సుమా ధన్యాత్ముడు.
English Translation: Blessed is the one who speaks appropriately according to the moment, navigating the world safely without causing pain to others and without getting hurt oneself.

ఎప్పుడు దప్పులు వెదకెడు
నప్పురుషుని గొల్వగూడ దది యెట్లన్నన్‌
సర్పంబు పడగ నీడను
గప్ప వసించిన విధంబు గదరా సుమతీ
భావం: నల్లత్రాచుయొక్క పడగనీడను వసించు కప్ప బ్రతుకెంత అస్థిరమైనదో ఆ విధముగనే ఎల్లప్పుడు దోషములను వెదకు యజమానుని సేవించువాడి బ్రతుకును ప్రాణభయముతో కూడినది.
English Translation: Serving a master who constantly finds fault is dangerous. It is akin to a frog seeking refuge under the hood of a venomous cobra.

ఎప్పుడు సంపద కలిగిన
నప్పుడు బంధువులు వత్తు రది యెట్లన్నన్‌
తెప్పలుగ జెఱువు నిండిన
గప్పలు పదివేలు చేరు గదరా సుమతీ
భావం: చెరువునిండా నీరుచేరగనే వేలకొలది కప్పలందులోనికి ఏ విధముగా చేరుకొనునో, సంపద కలిగిన బంధువులెక్కువగా జేరుకొందురు.
English Translation: When wealth arrives, relatives flock around in abundance. It is just like thousands of frogs gathering the moment a lake fills to the brim with water.

ఏఱకుమీ కసుగాయలు,
దూఱకుమీ బంధుజనుల దోషము సుమ్మీ,
పాఱకుమీ రణమందున,
మీఱకుమీ గురువు నాజ్ఞ మేదిని సుమతీ
భావం: ఈ భూమి పైన పచ్చికాయలు ఏరి తినకుము, చుట్టములను ధూషింపకుము, యుధ్ధమునుండి వెనుదిరిగి పారిపోకుము, పెద్దల మాటను జవదాటకుము తప్పు సుమా.
English Translation: Do not pick and eat unripe fruit, do not revile relatives, do not flee from the field of battle, and never disobey the command of a teacher or elder.

ఒక యూరికి నొక కరణము,
నొక తీర్పరియైన గాక, నొగి దఱుచైనన్‌,
గకవికలు గాక యుండునె
సకలంబును గొట్టువడక సహజము సుమతీ
భావం: ఒక గ్రామమునకు ఒక లేఖరి, ఒక ధర్మాధికారి యుండవలెను. అట్లు కాక పైన చెప్పబడినవారు పెక్కుమందియైనచో అనేకమైన గంధరగోళములు పుట్టి సమస్తమును చెడిపోవుట సహజము.
English Translation: A village should have a single accountant and a single arbiter. If such officials multiply, confusion and chaos will inevitably ruin everything.

ఒరు నాత్మ దలచు సతి విడు,
మఱుమాటలు పలుకు సతుల మన్నింపకుమీ,
వెఱ పెఱుగని భటునేలకు,
తఱచుగ సతి గవయ బోకు, తగదుర సుమతీ

ఒల్లని సతి నొల్లని పతి,
నొల్లని చెలికాని విడువ నొల్లని వాడే
గొల్లండు, కాక ధరలో
గొల్లండును గొల్లడౌనె గుణమున సుమతీ
భావం: తన్ను ప్రేమించని భార్యను, యజమానుని, స్నేహితుని విడిచిపెట్టుటకు అంగీకరింపనివాడే వెర్రిగొల్లవాడు. కాని జాతిచేత గొల్లవాదైనంత మాత్రమున గుణములయందు వెర్రి గొల్లవాడు కాదు.
English Translation: He who refuses to let go of an indifferent wife, an unloving master, or a disloyal friend is truly foolish. A person is not foolish merely by caste, but by their lack of judgment.

ఓడల బండ్లును వచ్చును,
ఓడలు నాబండ్లమీద నొప్పుగ వచ్చున్‌,
ఓడలు బండ్లును వలనే
వాడంబడు గలిమి లేమి వసుధను సుమతీ
భావం: నావలమీద బండ్లును, బండ్లమీద నావలును వచ్చునట్లుగనే భాగ్యవంతులకు దారిద్ర్యము, దరిద్రులకు భాగ్యమును పర్యాయముగా కలుగుచుండును.
English Translation: Just as boats may be carried on carts at times, and carts aboard boats at others, prosperity and poverty alternate in human life.

కడు బలవంతుడైనను
బుడమిని బ్రాయంపుటాలి బుట్టిన యింటన్‌
దడవుండ నిచ్చెనేనియు
బడుపుగ నంగడికి దానె బంపుట సుమతీ
భావం: ఎంత సమర్ధత కలవాడైనను యవ్వనమందున్న భార్యను చిరకాలము పుట్టినయింట నుండనిచ్చినచో తానే స్వయముగా భార్యను వ్యభిచార వృత్తికి దింపినవాడగును.
English Translation: No matter how capable a man may be, leaving his youthful wife at her maternal home for too long is virtually akin to pushing her toward ruin oneself.

కనకపు సింహాసనమున
శునకము గూర్చుండబెట్టి శుభ లగ్నమునం
దొనరగ బట్టము గట్టిన
వెనుకటి గుణమేల మాను వినరా సుమతీ
భావం: కుక్కను తీసుకొని వచ్చి మంచి ముహూర్తమునందు బంగారు గద్దె మీద కూర్చుండబెట్టి పట్టాభిషేకము చేసినప్పటికి దాని నైజగుణము నేలాగున మానలేదో, ఆ విధముగనే అల్పుడైనవానికి ఎంత గౌరవము చేసి మంచి పదవొసంగినను తన నీచత్వమును వదలనేరడు.
English Translation: Even if you seat a stray dog on a golden throne and perform a coronation at an auspicious hour, it will not shed its base nature. Likewise, a petty person will never abandon their low habits.

కప్పకు నొరగాలైనను,
సర్పమునకు రోగమైన, సతి తులువైనన్‌,
ముప్పున దరిద్రుడైనను,
తప్పదు మఱి దుఃఖ మగుట తథ్యము సుమతీ
భావం: కప్పకు కాలు విఱిగినను, పాముకు రోగము కలిగినను, భార్య దుష్టురాలైనను, ముసలితనములో దారిద్ర్యము సంభవించినను, ఎక్కువ దుఖప్రదమగును తప్పదు.
English Translation: A fractured leg for a frog, illness for a serpent, a wicked temperament in a spouse, and poverty in old age will invariably bring unending sorrow.

కమలములు నీట బాసిన
కమలాప్తుని రశ్మి సోకి కమలిన భంగిన్‌
తమ తమ నెలవులు దప్పిన
తమ మిత్రులు శత్రులౌట తథ్యము సుమతీ
భావం: కమలములు తమ నివాసమైన నీటిని విడిచిపెట్టిన తరువాత తమ మిత్రుడైన సూర్యుని యొక్క ఎండ తాకుడుకే కమలుచున్నవి. అట్లే మానవులు తమ తమ హద్దులు దాటి ప్రవర్తించిన తమ స్నేహితులే తమకు శత్రువులగుదురు.
English Translation: When lotuses leave the water, the rays of their friend, the sun, scorch them to wither. Likewise, when people cross their proper bounds and stations, even their friends turn into foes.

కరణము గరణము నమ్మిన
మరణాంతక మౌను గాని మనలేడు సుమీ;
కరణము దన సరి కరణము
మఱి నమ్మక మర్మ మీక మనవలె సుమతీ
భావం: ఒక లేఖకుడు మఱియొక లేఖకుని నమ్మిన మరణముతో సమానమైన ఆపదను చెందును కావున లేఖకుడైనవాడు తనతో సమానుడైన మఱియొక లేఖరిని విశ్వసింపక తన గుట్టు ఈయక జీవింపవలయును.
English Translation: If one accountant blindly trusts another, it leads to fatal peril. Therefore, an official must survive by keeping secrets guarded and not placing blind trust in a peer.

కరణముల ననుసరింపక
విరసంబున దిన్న తిండి వికటించు జుమీ
యిరుసున కందెన బెట్టక
పరమేశ్వరు బండి యైన బారదు సుమతీ
భావం: బండి యిరుసునకు కందెన పెట్టకున్నచో భగవంతుని బండియైనను త్వరితంగా పరుగెత్తదు. అదే విధముగా పంచేంద్రియాలు ఇచ్చే సూచనలు గమనిచకుండా ఏది పడితే అది తింటే వికటించగలదు.
English Translation: Food consumed thoughtlessly against the body's natural cues will cause distress. Even the chariot of the Supreme Lord cannot move without grease applied to its axle.

కరణము సాదైయున్నను,
గరి మద ముడిగినను, బాము గఱవక యున్నన్‌,
ధర దేలు మీటకున్నను,
గర మరుదుగ లెక్క గొనరు గదరా సుమతీ
భావం: భూమియందు కరణము నెమ్మదివాడైనను, ఏనుగు మదము పోయినదైననూ, త్రాచు కఱవకున్నను, తేలు కుట్టకున్నను ఆశ్చర్యముతో మిక్కిలి తేలికగా చూతురు.
English Translation: If an accountant is gentle, an elephant sheds its frenzy, a cobra does not bite, and a scorpion withholds its sting, people regard them with mild surprise and dismiss them lightly.

కసుగాయ గఱచి చూచిన
మసలక పస యొగరు రాక మధురంబగునా;
పస గలుగు యువతులుండగ
పసి బాలల బొందువాడు పశువుర సుమతీ
భావం: పక్వమునకు వచ్చిన పండ్లను వదలి పచ్చికాయలను కొఱికిన తీయదనము లేక ఒగరుగా దోచును. ఆ విధముగనే చాతుర్యము గల పడుచులుండంగా పసిపాపలను కూడెడువానికి సుఖము శూన్యము అట్టివాడు నిజముగా పశువే.
English Translation: Biting into raw, unripe fruit yields only astringent sourness, not sweetness. Similarly, pursuing immature children while mature women are present brings no joy; such a person is a brute.

కవి కాని వాని వ్రాతయు,
నవరస భావములు లేని నాతుల వలపున్‌,
దవిలి చను పంది నేయని
వివిధాయుధ కౌశలంబు వృధరా సుమతీ
భావం: కవికానట్టివాడు వ్రాసిన రచనయును, తొమ్మిది రసముల యొక్క స్థితులు తెలియని స్త్రీలయొక్క ప్రేమయును, ముందు పోయెడి పందిని వెంబడించి కొట్టలేనివాని యొక్క ఆయుధవిద్యయందలి నేర్పరితనము వ్యర్ధము.
English Translation: The writings of one who is not a true poet, the affection of women devoid of aesthetic emotions, and skill with weapons that fails to strike a fleeing boar are all utterly useless.

కాదు సుమీ దుస్సంగతి,
పోదుసుమీ "కీర్తి" కాంత పొందిన పిదపన్‌,
వాదు సుమీ యప్పిచ్చుట,
లేదు సుమీ సతుల వలపు లేశము సుమతీ
భావం: చెడ్డవారితోడ స్నేహము మంచిదికాదు. కీర్తి వచ్చిన పిదప నశించదు. అప్పొసంగుట తగవులకు మూలము. స్త్రీలకడ ప్రేమ శూన్యము.
English Translation: Wicked company brings no good; genuine renown once earned does not fade; lending money inevitably brings quarrels; and true affection is virtually absent in frivolous consorts.

కాముకుడు దనిసి విడిచిన
కోమలి బరవిటుడు గవయ గోరుట యెల్లన్‌
బ్రేమమున జెఱకు పిప్పికి
చీమలు వెస మూగినట్లు సిద్ధము సుమతీ
భావం: ఒక విటుడు తృప్తియగునట్లుగా భోగించి విడచిన కాంతను మఱియొక జాఱుడు అనుభవింపగోరుట చెఱకునందలి రసమును సంపూర్ణముగా తీసివేసిన తరువాత ఆ పిప్పికై చీమలు ముసుకొన్నట్లుండును.
English Translation: A libertine pursuing a courtesan discarded by another is like ants swarming eagerly over crushed sugarcane from which all juice has already been drained.

కారణము లేని నగవును,

భావం: కారణములేని నవ్వును, పేరణము(రవిక) లేని స్త్రీయును, పూరణములేని బూరెయును, వీరణములేని పెండ్లియును వ్యర్ధములు.
English Translation: Unprovoked laughter, a woman without an upper garment, a stuffed delicacy lacking filling, and a wedding celebration without percussion drums are all pointless.

కులకాంత తోడ నెప్పుడు
గలహింపకు, వట్టి తప్పు ఘటియింపకుమీ,
కలకంఠి కంట కన్నీ
రొలికిన సిరి యింట నుండ నొల్లదు సుమతీ
భావం: భార్యతోడ నెప్పుడును జగడములాడవలదు. లేని నేరములు ఆరోపింపవలదు. ఉత్తమ ఇల్లాలియొక్క కంటనీరు క్రిందపడిన నాయింట లక్ష్మి నిలవదు.
English Translation: Never quarrel with your wedded wife, nor accuse her of baseless faults. Wealth and prosperity will not dwell in a household where the tears of a virtuous woman fall.

కూరిమి గల దినములలో
నేరము లెన్నడును గలుగ నేరవు మఱి యా
కూరిమి విరసంబైనను
నేరములే తోచు చుండు నిక్కము సుమతీ
భావం: పరస్పరము స్నేహమున్న రోజులలో నేరములెప్పుడును కనుపించబోవు. ఆ స్నేహము చెడగానే అన్నియును తప్పులుగా కనపడుచుండును. ఇది నిజము.
English Translation: During days of fondness and friendship, no flaws are ever perceived. But once affection turns bitter, every single action appears to be a fault.

కొంచెపు నరు సంగతిచే
నంచితముగ గీడు వచ్చు నది యెట్లన్నన్‌
గించిత్తు నల్లి కుట్టిన
మంచమునకు జేటు వచ్చు మహిలో సుమతీ
భావం: చిన్న నల్లి కుట్టిన ఆ నల్లి యున్న మంచమును ఎండలో వేయుట కర్రతో కొట్టుట, మరుగునీళ్ళు పోయుట మొదలగు ఆపదలు కలుగును. ఆ విధముగనే అల్పుడైనవానితోడి స్నేహము ఎట్టివారికైనను ఆపదను తెచ్చిపెట్టును.
English Translation: Associating with a base person brings inevitable harm. When a tiny bedbug bites, the entire cot gets struck with sticks, exposed to harsh sun, or scalded with boiling water.

కొక్కోకమెల్ల జదివిన,
చక్కనివాడైన, రాజ చంద్రుండైనన్‌,
మిక్కిలి రొక్కము లియ్యక,
చిక్కదురా వారకాంత సిద్ధము సుమతీ
భావం: వెలయాలు పుష్కలముగా ధనమీయకున్న ఎంతగా రతిశాస్త్రమును చదివినవాడైనను, అందగాడైనను, గొప్ప రాజశ్రేష్టుడైనను, ప్రేమించి దగ్గరకు చేరదు.
English Translation: Even if one has mastered treatises on love, possesses radiant looks, or rules as a monarch, a courtesan will never show affection unless showered with ample money.

కొఱ గాని కొడుకు బుట్టిన
కొఱ గామియె కాదు, తండ్రి గుణముల జెఱచున్‌
చెఱకు తుద వెన్ను బుట్టిన
జెఱకున తీపెల్ల జెఱచు సిద్ధము సుమతీ
భావం: చెఱకుగడ చివర వెన్ను పుట్టినచో ఆ చెఱకునందలి తీయదనము నంతయు నేవిధముగ పాడుచేయునో ఆ విధముగనే అప్రయోజకుడైన కుమారుడు కలిగిన కుటుంబమునకుపయోగకారి కాకపోవుట యటుండగా తండ్రి మంచిగుణమును కూడా పాడుచేయును.
English Translation: An unworthy son not only proves useless to his family but also tarnishes his father's virtues, just as flower tassels sprouting at the tip of sugarcane spoil the sweetness of the entire stalk.

కోమలి విశ్వాసంబును,
బాములతో జెలిమి, యన్య భామల వలపున్‌,
వేముల తియ్యదనంబును,
భూమీశుల నమ్మికలును బొంకుర సుమతీ
భావం: స్త్రీలయందు విశ్వాసమును, పాములయందు స్నేహమును, పరస్త్రీలయందు ప్రేమయును, వేపచెట్లయందు తీయదనమును, రాజులయందు నమ్మకము వట్టి అసత్యములు.
English Translation: Trust in fickle women, friendship with serpents, love from another's wife, sweetness in neem trees, and promises from kings are all untrustworthy illusions.

గడన గల మగని జూచిన
నడుగడుగున మడుగు లిడుదు రతివలు దమలో;
గడ నుడుగు మగని జూచిన
నడ పీనుగు వచ్చె నంచు నగుదురు సుమతీ
భావం: స్త్రీలు సంపాదన కలిగిన భర్తను చూచిన అడుగులకు మడుగులొత్తుచు పూజింతురు. సంపాదనలేని మగనిని చూచినచో నడుచునట్టి శవము వచ్చెనని హీనముగా జూతురు.
English Translation: Women attend eagerly to an earning husband at every step. But if a husband loses his earning ability, they regard him disdainfully as a walking corpse.

చింతింపకు కడచిన పని,
కింతులు వలతురని నమ్మ కెంతయు మదిలో,
నంతఃపుర కాంతలతో
మంతనముల మాను మిదియె మతముర సుమతీ
భావం: జరిగిపోయిన దానిని గురించి ఆలోచించుటయు, స్త్రీలు తన్ను ప్రేమింతురని విశ్వసించుటయును, రాణీవాసపు స్త్రీలతో రహస్యములను విడిచిపెట్టుము. ఇదియే అనుసరించవలసిన మంచితనము.
English Translation: Do not brood over what is already past; do not place blind faith in the romantic promises of women; and avoid intimate whispers with palace ladies. This is sound wisdom.
46
చీమలు పెట్టిన పుట్టలు
పాముల కిరవైనయట్లు పామరుడు దగన్‌
హేమంబు గూడ బెట్టిన
భూమీశుల పాల జేరు భువిలో సుమతీ
భావం: చీమలు పెట్టినటువంటి పుట్టలు పాములకు నివాసమైనంట్లు, అజ్ఞానుడు కూడబెట్టిన బంగారమంతయు రాజుల వశమైపోవును.
English Translation: Just as anthills built laboriously by ants become dwellings for snakes, all the gold hoarded by an ignorant miser ultimately falls into the hands of rulers.

చుట్టములు గాని వారలు
చుట్టములము నీకటంచు సొంపు దలిర్పన్‌
నెట్టుకొని యాశ్రయింతురు
గట్టిగ ద్రవ్యంబు గలుగ గదరా సుమతీ
భావం: ధనము కలిగిన యెడల ఏ సంబంధంలేని వారు కూడ, ఆ ధనము మీది ఆశతో, లేని సంబంధము కలుపుకొని మన కూడా ఉంటారు.
English Translation: When a person amasses substantial wealth, even strangers come running, feigning deep affection and claiming kinship out of greed for that money.

చేతులకు దొడవు దానము,
భూతలనాథులకు దొడవు బొంకమి ధరలో,
నీతియె తొడవెవ్వారికి,
నాతికి మానంబు తొడవు నయముగ సుమతీ
భావం: చేతులకు దానమును, పాలకులకు అసత్యమును పలుకకుండుటయును, అందరికినీ న్యాయమును, స్త్రీకి అభిమానమును అలంకారములు.
English Translation: Charity is the ornament of hands; truthful speech is the ornament of rulers; ethical conduct is the ornament for all; and self-respect is the true ornament of a woman.

తడ వోర్వక, యొడ లోర్వక,
కడు వేగం బడిచి పడిన గార్యం బగునే;
తడ వోర్చిన, నొడ లోర్చిన,
జెడిపోయిన కార్యమెల్ల జేకుఱు సుమతీ
భావం: ఆలస్యమునకు, శరీర శ్రమకును సహింపక తొందరపడిన నేకార్యమును కానేరదు. ఆలస్యమునకును శరీర శ్రమకును ఓర్చుకొన్నప్పుడే చెడిపోయిన కార్యమంతయు నెఱవేరుచుండును.
English Translation: No endeavor succeeds if one cannot tolerate delay or endure bodily strain in reckless haste. When one shows patience and bears hardships, even ruined ventures can be brought to fruition.

తన కోపమె తన శత్రువు,
తన శాంతమె తనకు రక్ష, దయ చుట్టంబౌ
తన సంతోషమె స్వర్గము,
తన దుఃఖమె నరక మండ్రు తథ్యము సుమతీ
భావం: తన కోపమే తనను శత్రువులువలె బాధించును. తన శాంతమే తనను రక్షించును. తన దయయే తనకు చుట్టమువలె సహాయపడును. తన ఆనందమే తనకు ఇంద్రలోక సౌఖ్యము. తన దుఖమే తనకు నరకమగును. ఇది నిజము.
English Translation: One's own anger is their worst enemy; one's calm forbearance is their true shield; compassion is their dearest kin; contentment is heaven itself; and sorrow is living hell.

తన యూరి తపసి తపమును,
తన పుత్రుని విద్య పెంపు, దన సతి రూపున్‌,
దన పెరటి చెట్టు మందును,
మనసున వర్ణింపరెట్టి మనుజులు సుమతీ
భావం: తన యూరిజనుల తపోనిష్టయును, తన కుమారుని విద్యాధిక్యమును, తన భార్యయొక్క సౌందర్యమును, తన ఇంటి వైద్యమును ఎట్టి మనుజులును గొప్పగా వర్ణించి చెప్పరు.
English Translation: People rarely praise the asceticism of a local hermit, the scholarship of their own son, the beauty of their own wife, or the medicinal value of a plant growing in their backyard.
52
తన కలిమి యింద్ర భోగము,
తన లేమియె స్వర్గలోక దారిద్ర్యంబున్‌,
దన చావు జల ప్రళయము,
తను వలచిన యదియె రంభ తథ్యము సుమతీ!
భావం: తన యొక్క ఐశ్వర్యమే దేవలోక వైభవము, తన దారిద్ర్యమే సమస్తమైన లోకములకు దారిద్ర్యము, తన చావే ప్రపంచమునకు ప్రళయము, తాను ప్రేమించినదే రంభ. ఈ విధముగా మనుజులు భావింతురు. నిజము ఇది.
English Translation: Men tend to think their own wealth is celestial luxury, their poverty is universal ruin, their death is the cosmic deluge, and the woman they desire is an apsara like Rambha.

తన వారు లేని చోటను,
జనమించుక లేని చోట, జగడము చోటన్‌,
అనుమానమైన చోటను,
మనుజునకును నిలువ దగదు మహిలో సుమతీ
భావం: తనకు కావలసిన చుట్టములు లేనిచోటునను, తనకు చెల్లుబడి లేని తావునను, తగువులాడుకొను చోటునను, తను అనుమానించు ప్రదేశమునను మానవుడు నిలువరాదు.
English Translation: A person should never linger in a place where they have no well-wishers, where they have no influence, where constant quarrels rage, or where distrust prevails.

తమలము వేయని నోరును,
విమతులతో చెలిమి చేసి వెతబడు తెలివిన్‌,
గమలములు లేని కొలకును,
హిమధాముడు లేని రాత్రి హీనము సుమతీ
భావం: తాంబూలము వేయని నోరును, దుర్మార్గులతో స్నేహము చేసి బాధపడు బుద్ధియును, తామరపూవులులేని చెఱువును, చంద్రుడు లేని రాత్రియును శోభిల్లవు.
English Translation: A mouth without betel leaf, an intellect wasted in befriending enemies, a pond without lotuses, and a night without the moon are entirely bereft of grace.

తలనుండు విషము ఫణికిని,
వెలయంగా దోక నుండు వృశ్చికమునకున్‌,
తలతోక యనక యుండును
ఖలునకు నిలువెల్ల విషము గదరా సుమతీ!
భావం: సర్పమునకు విషము తలయందుండును, తేలునకు తోకయందుండును. దుష్టునకు విషము తలతోక యనకుండ శరీరమంతనుండును.
English Translation: Venom resides in the fangs of a serpent and in the tail of a scorpion, but in a malicious person, venom permeates the entire body from head to toe.

తలపొడుగు ధనము పోసిన
వెలయాలికి నిజము లేదు వివరింపంగా
దల దడివి బాస జేసిన
వెలయాలిని నమ్మరాదు వినరా సుమతీ
భావం: విచారింపగా నిలువెత్తు ధనమిచ్చినప్పటికిని వేశ్య నిజము పలుకదు. కావున తలమీద చేయి పెట్టి ప్రమాణము చేసినప్పటికి వేశ్యను విశ్వసించరాదు.
English Translation: Even if showered with wealth equal to her height, a mercenary courtesan will never speak the truth. Therefore, do not trust her even if she swears with her hand on your head.
57
తల మాసిన, నొలు మాసిన,
వలువలు మాసినను బ్రాణ వల్లభునైనన్‌
గులకాంతలైన రోతురు
తిలకింపగ భూమిలోన దిరముగ సుమతీ!
భావం: పరిశీలింపగా భూలోకములో, తలమాసినను, శరీరమునకు మురికిపట్టినను, ధరించెడి బట్టలు మాసిపోయినను చేసుకొన్న భర్తనైనను ఇల్లాండ్రు ఏవగించుకొందురు.
English Translation: If hair is disheveled, the body unwashed, and clothes soiled and dirty, even a devoted wife will look upon her beloved husband with disdain.

తాను భుజింపని యర్థము
మానవ పతి జేరు గొంత మఱి భూగతమౌ
గానల నీగలు గూర్చిన
తేనియ యొరు జేరునట్లు తిరముగ సుమతీ!
భావం: అరణ్యమునందు తేనేటీగలచే కొడబెట్టిన తేనె కడకు ఇతరుల పాలైనట్లు లోభివాడు తాను నోరుకట్టుకొని కూడబెట్టిన ధనము కొంత ప్రభువులపాలును కొంత భూమి పాలునగును.
English Translation: The wealth a miser refuses to enjoy or share will either be seized by the ruler or buried lost in the earth, just as honey gathered by bees in the forest is eventually taken by others.
59
దగ్గఱ కొండెము సెప్పెడు
ప్రెగ్గడ పలుకులకు రాజు ప్రియుడై మఱి దా
నెగ్గు బ్రజ కాచరించుట
బొగ్గులకై కల్పతరువు బొడుచుట సుమతీ!
భావం: రాజు తన మంత్రి చెప్పెడి చాడీ మాటలకు లోబడి మంచి చెడ్డలు తెలుసుకొనజాలక జనులను హింసించుట, బొగ్గుల కొఱకు కోరిన కోరిక లొసగెడి కల్పవృక్షమును నఱకి వేసుకొనుటవంటిది.
English Translation: A king who blindly heeds the slanders of his minister and oppresses his subjects is like a fool chopping down the wish-fulfilling divine tree merely to make charcoal.

ధనపతి సఖుడైయుండగ
నెనయంగా శివుడు భిక్షమెత్తగ వలసెన్‌;
దన వారి కెంత గలిగిన
దన భాగ్యమె తనకు గాక తథ్యము సుమతీ!
భావం: గొప్ప ధనవంతుడైన కుబేరుడు తనకు మిత్రుడై యున్నను శివుడు బిచ్చమెత్తవలసి వచ్చెను. కావున తాను సంపాదించుకొన్న (తన దగ్గరున్న) భాగ్యమే తనకు సహాయ పడవలయును కాని తన దగ్గర నున్నవాడికడ నెంత భాగ్యమున్నను నిష్ప్రయోజనము.
English Translation: Even though Kubera, the lord of boundless riches, was Lord Shiva's close friend, Shiva still had to wander begging for alms. One's own resources are what sustain oneself, not the riches of companions.

ధీరులకు జేయు మేలది
సారంబగు నారికేళ సలిలము భంగిన్‌
గౌరవమును మఱి మీదట
భూరి సుఖావహము నగును భువిలో సుమతీ!
భావం: బుధ్ధిమంతుడైన వారికి చేసెడు మేలు, కొబ్బరికాయయందలి నీరు వలె మిక్కిలి శ్రేష్టమైనదియును, ప్రియమైనదియును, గొప్ప సుఖమునకు స్థానమైనదియును అగును.
English Translation: A favor done for a steadfast and noble person is like the pure water inside a coconut—it brings enduring dignity, lasting delight, and profound well-being.

నడువకుమీ తెరువొక్కట,
గుడువకుమీ శత్రు నింట గూరిమి తోడన్‌,
ముడువకుమీ పరధనముల,
నుడువకుమీ యొరుల మనసు నొవ్వగ సుమతీ
భావం: తోడులేక మార్గమందు ఒంటరిగా పోకుము, విరోధియింట ప్రీతితో భుజింపకుము, ఇతరుల ధనమును దగ్గరనుంచుకొనకుము, ఇతరుల మనస్సు నొచ్చునట్టుగా మాట్లాడకుము.
English Translation: Do not travel a road alone without a companion, do not dine affectionately at an enemy's home, do not hold onto another's money, and never utter words that hurt the feelings of others.

నమ్మకు సుంకరి, జూదరి,
నమ్మకు మొగసాల వాని, నటు వెలయాలిన్‌,
నమ్మకు మంగడి వానిని,
నమ్మకు మీ వామ హస్తు నవనిని సుమతీ!
భావం: పన్ను వసూలు చేయువానిని, జూదమాడువానిని, కంసాలివానిని, నటకుని, వేశ్యను, వర్తకుని, ఎడమచేతితో పనులు చేయువానిని విశ్వసింపుకుము.
English Translation: Put no trust in a tax collector, a gambler, a gatekeeper, an actor, a courtesan, a dishonest trader, or a deceitful left-handed schemer.

నయమున బాలుం ద్రావరు,
భయమునను విషమ్మునైన భక్షింతురుగా;
నయమెంత దోషకారియొ,
భయమే జూపంగ వలయు బాగుగ సుమతీ!
భావం: మెత్తని మాటలచే పాలు కూడ త్రాగరు. భయపెట్టినచో విషమునైనను త్రాగుదురు. మృదుత్వ మెప్పుడును చెడునే కలిగించును. కావున చక్కగా భయమునే చూపుచుండవలయును.
English Translation: People often refuse to drink milk when urged gently, yet they will swallow poison when coerced by fear. Leniency frequently invites trouble; firmness and authority must be shown where appropriate.

నరపతులు మేఱ దప్పిన,
దిరమొప్పగ విధవ యింట దీర్పరి యైనన్‌,
గరణము వైదికుడైనను,
మరణాంతక మౌనుగాని మానదు సుమతీ!
భావం: రాజు హద్దుమీరి వర్తించినను, శాశ్వతముగా విధవ ఇంట పెత్తనదారి ఐనప్పటికిని, లేఖకుడ నియొగికాక వైదికుడైనప్పటికిని ప్రాణము మీదికి వచ్చును తప్పదు.
English Translation: When monarchs overstep their bounds, when a widow arbitrarily rules a household, or when an administrative clerk lacks secular competence, fatal trouble is bound to follow.

నవరస భావాలంకృత
కవితా గోష్టియును, మధుర గానంబును దా
నవివేకి కెంత జెప్పిన
జెవిటికి శంఖూదినట్లు సిద్ధము సుమతీ!
భావం: తొమ్మిది రసములతో కూడిన మంచి భావములతో శృంగారింపబడిన కవిత్వ సంబంధమైన సంభాషణమును, కమ్మని సంగీతమును జ్ఞానహీనునకు వినిపించుట, చెవిటివాని యొద్ద శంఖమును ఊదినట్లుండును.
English Translation: Reciting poetry rich in aesthetic rasas or singing melodious music before an ignorant person is like blowing a conch shell into the ear of a deaf man.

నవ్వకుమీ సభ లోపల;
నవ్వకుమీ తల్లి, దండ్రి, నాథుల తోడన్‌;
నవ్వకుమీ పరసతితో;
నవ్వకుమీ విప్రవరుల నయమిది సుమతీ
భావం: సభలలో నవ్వరాదు. తల్లిని, తండ్రిని, భర్తను, ఇతరుల భార్యను, బ్రాహ్మణులను చూచి నవ్వరాదు.
English Translation: Do not laugh mockingly in formal assemblies; never mock your mother, father, or husband; do not laugh inappropriately with another's wife; and do not ridicule venerable scholars.

నీరే ప్రాణాధారము
నోరే రసభరితమైన నుడువుల కెల్లన్‌
నారియె నరులకు రత్నము
చీరయె శృంగారమండ్రు సిద్ధము సుమతీ!
భావం: ఎల్లవారికిన్ బ్రతుకుటకు ఆధారమైనది నీరే. నవరసముల తోడను నిండునట్టి మాటలన్నింటికి ఆధారమైనది నోరే, నరులకు స్త్రీయే రత్నమువంటిది, వేష అలంకారాలలో చీరకట్టే శృంగారానికి అందం, అని తెలిసినవారు చెప్తూంటారు.
English Translation: Water is the essence of life; the mouth is the vessel of eloquent speech; a noble woman is a gem among mortals; and the graceful saree is the true ornament of feminine elegance.

పగవల దెవ్వరి తోడను,
వగవంగా వలదు లేమి వచ్చిన పిదపన్‌,
దెగ నాడ వలదు సభలను
మగువకు మనసియ్య వలదు మహిలో సుమతీ
భావం: భూమియందెవ్వరితోదను విరోధము మంచిది కాదు. దారిద్ర్యము వచ్చిన పిదప విచారింపరాదు. సభలో ఎవ్వరిని దూషింపరాదు. స్త్రీకి తన యొక్క హృదయము తెలియనీయరాదు.
English Translation: Bear enmity toward none; do not lament over poverty once it strikes; never speak contemptuously in assemblies; and do not reveal your vulnerable inner thoughts to a fickle woman.

పతికడకు, దన్ను గూరిన
సతికడకును, వేల్పు కడకు, సద్గురు కడకున్‌,
సుతుకడకు రిత్తచేతుల
మతిమంతులు చనరు నీతి మార్గము సుమతీ!
భావం: ప్రభువు కడకును, భార్యకడకును, భగవంతుని సన్నిధానమునకును, గురుదేవుని దగ్గరకును, కుమారుని కడకును వట్టిచేతులతో బుద్ధిమంతులు పోరాదు. ఇదియే నీతిమార్గము.
English Translation: The wise never visit a sovereign, a loving spouse, a deity's shrine, a spiritual master, or their own child empty-handed. This is the path of proper conduct.

పనిచేయునెడల దాసియు,
ననుభవమున రంభ, మంత్రి యాలోచనలన్‌,
దనభుక్తి యెడల దల్లియు,
నన్‌ దన కులకాంత యుండు నగురా సుమతీ!
భావం: ఇంటిపనులు చేసుకొనునప్పుడు దాసిగాను, భోగించునప్పుడు దేవతాస్త్రీయగు రంభగాను, సలహా లొసంగునపుడు మంత్రిగాను, భోజనము పెట్టునపుడు తల్లిగాను వర్తింపగలిగినదిగా భార్యయుండవలయును.
English Translation: A noble wife acts as a diligent maid in work, an enchanting nymph in intimacy, a wise counselor in deliberation, and a nourishing mother while serving meals.

పరనారీ సోదరుడై,
పరధనముల కాసపడక, పరులకు హితుడై,
పరులు దను బొగడ నెగడక,
పరు లలిగిన నలుగ నతడు పరముడు సుమతీ!
భావం: ఇతర స్త్రీలను తోబుట్టువులుగా చూసుకొంటూ, ఇతరుల ధనానికి ఆశపడకుండా, అందరికీ ఇష్టుడై, ఇతరులు పొగుడుతుంటే ఉప్పొంగక, కోపం ప్రదర్శించినప్పుడు బాధ పడకుండా ఉండేవాడే శ్రేష్టుడు.
English Translation: He who treats other women as sisters, covets not another's wealth, wishes well for everyone, remains humble when praised, and stays composed when provoked is truly an exalted soul.

పరసతి కూటమి గోరకు,
పరధనముల కాసపడకు, బరునెంచకుమీ,
సరిగాని గోష్టి సేయకు,
సిరిచెడి చుట్టంబు కడకు జేరకు సుమతీ

English Translation: Do not seek intimacy with another's wife, do not covet others' wealth, do not count the flaws of others, do not engage in unworthy gossip, and do not seek refuge with relatives after losing your fortune.

పరసతుల గోష్ఠి నుండిన
పురుషుడు గాంగేయుడైన భువి నింద పడున్‌,
బరసతి సుశీలయైనను
బరుసంగతి నున్న నింద పాలగు సుమతీ!
భావం: పరస్త్రీలతో సరససల్లాపములాడుచుండిన భీష్ముడైనను భూమియందు నిందము పొందును. ఇతర స్త్రీయెంత సుస్వభావయైనను పరపురుషునితో స్నేహం చేసిన అపకీర్తి పాలగును.
English Translation: Even a man as resolute as Bhishma will face scandal if he constantly mingles with other women; similarly, even a chaste woman will suffer disgrace if found in the company of other men.

పరులకు నిష్టము సెప్పకు,
పొరుగిండ్లకు బనులు లేక పోవకు మెపుడున్‌,
బరు గదిసిన సతి గవయకు,
మెఱిగియు బిరుసైన హయము లెక్కకు సుమతీ
భావం: ఇతరులకు అప్రియములైనవానిని పలుకకుము. పనులులేక పొరుగిండ్లకు పోకుము. ఎప్పుడును పరుని పొందిన భార్యను కలియకుము. తెలిసియుండియు పొగరుబోతైన గుర్రమును ఎక్కకుము.
English Translation: Do not speak harsh or unpleasant words to others, never wander into neighboring houses without purpose, never consort with an unfaithful woman, and knowingly never mount an unruly horse.

పర్వముల సతుల గవయకు,
ముర్వీశ్వరు కరుణ నమ్మి యుబ్బకు మదిలో,
గర్వింప నాలి బెంపకు,
నిర్వహణము లేని చోట నిలువకు సుమతీ
భావం: పుణ్యదినములలో స్త్రీలను కలియకుము, ప్రభువుల దయను నమ్మి మనస్సునందు ఉప్పొంగిపోకుము. గర్వమును పొందిన భార్యను పోషింపకుము. సాగుదల లేనిచోట నిలువకుము.
English Translation: Do not indulge in carnal pleasures on sacred holy days; do not become complacent by trusting a ruler's favor; do not pamper an arrogant spouse; and never stay where daily sustenance is unsustainable.

పలు దోమి సేయు విడియము,
తలగడిగిన నాటి నిద్ర, తరుణులయెడలన్‌
బొల యలుక నాటి కూటమి
వెల యింతని చెప్పరాదు వినరా సుమతీ!
భావం: ధంతధావము చేసుకొని, తాంబూలమును వేసుకొని, తలంటుకొనినవాడు పోయిన నిద్రయును, స్త్రీలతోడ ప్రణయకలహం వచ్చిననాటి పొందును అంత్యంత సౌఖ్యప్రదములు, వాటి విలువ ఇంతని చెప్పజాలము.
English Translation: Chewing betel after cleaning the teeth, sound sleep after a refreshing head bath, and sweet reconciliation after a lover's tiff yield incomparable bliss whose value cannot be measured.

పాటెఱుగని పతి కొలువును,
గూటంబున కెఱుకపడని కోమలి రతియున్‌,
బేటెత్త జేయు చెలిమియు,
నేటికి నెదురీదినట్టు లెన్నగ సుమతీ
భావం: శ్రమను తెలుసుకొంజాలని ప్రభువును సేవించుటయును, కలయికకు తెలివిలేని స్త్రీతోడి సంభోగమును, వెంటనే భగ్నమగునట్లుగా చేయు స్నేహమును ఆలోచింపగా నదీప్రవాహమునకు ఎదురీదినట్లుగా నుండును.
English Translation: Serving a master who has no regard for toil, intimacy with a partner who lacks emotional resonance, and a friendship prone to sudden rupture are as exhausting as swimming against a torrential river.

పాలను గలసిన జలమును
పాల విధంబుననె యుండు బరికింపంగా
పాల చవి జెఱచు గావున
పాలసుడగు వాని పొందు వలదుర సుమతీ
భావం: పాలతోగలిసిన నీరు పాలవలెనే పైకి కనబడును, పరిశీలించినచో పాలయొక్క రుచిని చెడగొట్టును. అట్లే చెడ్డవారలతోడి స్నేహము స్వగౌరవము కూడ పోగొట్టజాలును. కావున అట్టి స్నేహము కూడదు.
English Translation: Water mixed with milk appears like milk at first glance, but it ruins the milk's rich flavor. Similarly, companionship with a wicked person erodes one's own honor; therefore, avoid it.

పాలసునకైన యాపద
జాలింబడి తీర్ప దగదు సర్వజ్ఞునకున్‌
తేలగ్ని బడగ బట్టిన
మేలెఱుగునె మీటు గాక మేదిని సుమతీ
భావం: తేలు నిప్పులో పడినప్పుడు, వానియందు జాలిపడి దానిని బయటకు తీయుటకు పట్టుకొనినచో కుట్టును. కాని మనము చేయబోవు మేలును తెలుసుకొనజాలదు. ఆ విధముగనే జాలిపడి మూర్ఖునకు ఆపదయందు అడ్దుపడజూచిన తిరిగి మనకపకారము చేయును కావున అట్లు చేయరాదు.
English Translation: Even a wise person should not rush out of pity to rescue an incorrigibly vile person in crisis. If one tries to pull a scorpion out of fire, it will simply sting the rescuing hand without understanding the help.

పిలువని పనులకు బోవుట,
గలయని సతి గతియు, రాజు గానని కొలువుం,
బిలువని పేరంటంబును,
వలువని చెలిమియును జేయ వలదుర సుమతీ
భావం: తన్ను పిలువని కార్యములు చేయబోవుటయును, హృదయములు కలియని స్త్రీతోడ సమాగమును, పాలకులు చూడని సేవను, పిలువని పేరంటమును కోరని స్నేహమును చేయతగదు
English Translation: Meddling in uninvited matters, union with an emotionally incompatible partner, service under an unobservant ruler, attending functions uninvited, and forcing unwanted friendships must all be avoided.

పుత్రోత్సాహము తండ్రికి
పుత్రుడు జన్మించినపుడె పుట్టదు, జనులా
పుత్రుని కనుగొని బొగడగ
పుత్రోత్సాహంబు నాడు పొందుర సుమతీ!
భావం: తండ్రికి కుమారుడు పుట్టగానే సంతోషము కలుగదు. ప్రజలు ఆ కుమారుని జూచి మెచ్చిన రోజుననే ఆ సంతోషము కలుగును.
English Translation: A father does not feel true paternal pride simply when a son is born; he experiences real joy only on the day the world recognizes and praises his son's noble character.

పురికిని ప్రాణము గోమటి,
వరికిని ప్రాణంబు నీరు వసుమతి లోనన్‌,
గరికిని ప్రాణము తొండము,
సిరికిని ప్రాణంబు మగువ సిద్ధము సుమతీ!
భావం: ఈ లోకములో పట్టణమునకు వైశ్యుడూ, వరిసస్యమునకు నీళ్ళును, ఏనుగునకు తొండమును, ఐశ్వర్యమునకు స్త్రీయును జీవము నొసగువారై యుందురు.
English Translation: The merchant is the life of a town; abundant water is the life of crops; the trunk is the life of an elephant; and a virtuous woman is the life of domestic prosperity.

పులి పాలు దెచ్చి యిచ్చిన,
నలవడగా గుండె గోసి యఱచే నిడినన్‌,
దలపొడుగు ధనము బోసిన,
వెలయాలికి గూర్మి లేదు వినరా సుమతీ!
భావం: దుస్సాధ్యమైన పులిపాలు దెచ్చి యిచ్చినను, హృదయమును కోసి యామె అరచేతబెట్తినను, నిలువెత్తు ధనమును ముందు పోసినను వేశ్యకు నిజమైన ప్రేమలేదు.
English Translation: Even if you procure impossible tigress milk, carve out your own heart into her palm, or heap wealth as tall as yourself before her, a mercenary courtesan possesses no genuine love.

పెట్టిన దినముల లోపల
నట్టడవులనైన వచ్చు నానార్థములున్‌,
బెట్టని దినముల గనకపు
గట్టెక్కిన నేమి లేదు గదరా సుమతీ! [85]
భావం: అదృష్టము మంచిదైన దినములలో అరణ్య మధ్యములకు పోయినను అక్కడకే సంపదలు వచ్చును. దురదృష్ట దినములలో బంగారు పర్వతము నెక్కినను ఏమియును లభింపదు.
English Translation: During days of good fortune, riches will arrive even if one is stranded in a deep forest. But during unfavorable times, one gains nothing even if standing atop a golden mountain.

పొరుగున బగవాడుండిన,
నిరవొందక వ్రాతకాడె యేలిక యైనన్‌,
ధర గాపు కొండెమాడిన,
గరణాలకు బ్రదుకు లేదు గదరా సుమతీ!
భావం: తన యింటి ప్రక్క శత్రువున్నను, బగుగా వ్రాయగలిగినవాడే ప్రభువైనను, గ్రామ పెత్తనదారు కొండెములు చెప్పువాడైఅను గ్రామ లేఖరుక్కు జీవితము జరుగదు.
English Translation: An accountant cannot thrive if an enemy lives next door, if the ruler is an exacting scribe himself, or if the village chief constantly slanders him.

బంగారు కుదువ బెట్టకు,
సంగరమున బాఱిపోకు సరసుడవైతే,
నంగడి వెచ్చము వాడకు,
వెంగలితో జెలిమి వలదు వినరా సుమతీ
భావం: బంగారు నగలను తాకట్టు పెట్టకుము. యుధ్ధభూమినుండి వెన్నిచ్చి పారిపోకుము. దుకాణము నుండి సరుకులు అరువు తెచ్చుకొనకుము, మూఢునితో స్నేహము చేయకుము.
English Translation: If you are a person of discernment, do not pledge gold jewels as pawn, do not flee the field of battle, do not buy daily provisions on credit, and never strike up a friendship with a fool.

బలవంతుడ నాకేమని
పలువురతో నిగ్రహించి పలుకుట మేలా;
బలవంత మైన సర్పము
చలి చీమల చేత జిక్కి చావదె సుమతీ!
భావం: నేను బలవంతుడను నాకేమి భయమున్నది అని చాలా మందితో నిర్లక్ష్యము చేసి పలికి విరోధము తెచ్చుకొనుట మంచిదికాదు. అది యెప్పుడూ హానిని కలిగించును. మిక్కిలి బలము కలిగిన సర్పము కూడా చలి చీమలకు లోబడి చచ్చుటలేదా?
English Translation: It is never wise to boast of one's physical strength and provoke conflicts with many. After all, does not even a mighty venomous serpent get overwhelmed and killed by tiny, swarming ants?

మదినొకని వలచి యుండగ
మదిచెడి యొక క్రూర విటుడు మానక తిరుగున్‌
బది చిలుక పిల్లి పట్టిన
జదువునె యాపంజరమున జగతిని సుమతీ
భావం: పిల్లి పంజరమును పట్టిన, పంజరము మధ్యనున్న చిలుక మాటాడునా! అట్లే మనసులో నొకని ప్రేమించిన స్త్రీ మరియొక విటునెంత బ్రతిమాలినను ప్రేమించదు.
English Translation: When a woman's heart is set upon someone else, a crude suitor pursues her in vain. Can a parrot trapped inside a cage repeat learned words when seized by the fear of a prowling cat?

మండల పతి సముఖంబున
మెండైన ప్రధాని లేక మెలగుట యెల్లన్‌
గొండంత మదపు టేనుగు
తొండము లేకుండినట్లు దోచుర సుమతీ
భావం: కొండంత పెద్దదైన యేనుగైనప్పటికిని తొండములేకపోయిన యెడల ఏలాగున శోభాహీనమై తోచునో ఆ విధముగనే గొప్ప దేశమును పరిపాలుంచురాజుకడ సమర్ధుడైన మంత్రి లేకున్నచో నాతని పాలన శోభావిహీనమగును.
English Translation: A monarch ruling without an able prime minister is like a massive elephant in rut that lacks its trunk—utterly devoid of majesty and effectiveness.

మంత్రిగలవాని రాజ్యము
తంత్రము సెడకుండ నిలుచు దఱచుగ ధరలో
మంత్రి విహీనుని రాజ్యము
జంత్రపు గీలూడినట్లు జరుగదు సుమతీ!
భావం: సమర్ధుడైన మంత్రి కలిగిన రాజుయొక్క దొరతనం ఉపాయములు(సామ, దాన, భేద, దండములు) పాడుకాకుండా సాగిపోవును. అట్టి మంత్రిలేని పాలనను కీలూడిపోయిన యంత్రమువలె సాగిపోనేరదు.
English Translation: A kingdom guided by a capable minister endures smoothly through diplomacy and statecraft. A kingdom without such a minister grinds to a halt like a machine whose main pin has slipped out.

మాటకు బ్రాణము సత్యము,
కోటకు బ్రాణంబు సుభట కోటి, ధరిత్రిన్‌
బోటికి బ్రాణము మానము,
చీటికి బ్రాణంబు వ్రాలు సిద్ధము సుమతీ!
భావం: నోటిమాటకు సత్యమును, పెద్ద దుర్గమునకు గొప్ప సైన్య సమూహమును, స్త్రీకి అభిమానమును, పరమును చేవ్రాలును ముఖ్యమైన ఆధారములు.
English Translation: Truth is the life of words; an array of valiant soldiers is the life of a fortress; dignity is the life of a woman; and a valid signature is the life of a promissory bond.

మానధను డాత్మధృతి చెడి
హీనుండగు వాని నాశ్రయించుట యెల్లన్‌
మానెడు జలముల లోపల
నేనుగు మెయి దాచినట్టు లెఱుగుము సుమతీ!
భావం: అభిమాన శ్రేష్టుడు మనోధైర్యముచెడి అల్పుని ఆశ్రయించుట మానెడు నీళ్ళలో ఏనుగు తన శరీరమును మఱుగు పరచినట్లుండును.
English Translation: A self-respecting person losing morale and seeking patronage from a base character is as futile as an elephant trying to hide its massive body inside a small bowl of water.

మేలెంచని మాలిన్యుని,
మాలను, మొగసాలెవాని, మంగలి హితుగా
నేలిన నరపతి రాజ్యము
నేల గలసి పోవుగాని నెగడదు సుమతీ!
భావం: ఉపకారమును జ్ఞప్తియందుంచుకొనని దుర్మార్గుని, పంచముని, కమసాలవానిని, మంగలిని, హితులనుజేసుకొని పాలించు రాజు యొక్క రాజ్యము మట్టిలో కలసి నాశనమగును కాని కీర్తిని కాంచదు.
English Translation: A king who rules relying on ungrateful scoundrels, outcasts, palace gatekeepers, and gossiping barbers as confidants will see his kingdom crumble to dust without ever achieving renown.

రాపొమ్మని పిలువని యా
భూపాలుని గొల్వ భుక్తి ముక్తులు గలవే
దీపంబు లేని యింటను
జేపున కీళ్ళాడినట్లు సిద్ధము సుమతీ!
భావం: దీపములేని గృహమునందు చేవుణికీళ్ళాట ఆడుకొనుట ఎట్లు నిశ్ప్రయోజనమో (ఆనంద ప్రదము ఎట్లుకాదో) ఆ విధముగనే రమ్మనిగాని, పొమ్మని కాని చెప్పని రాజును సేవించుటవలన జీవనమూ లేదు. మోక్షమూ లేదూ వట్టి నిశ్ప్రయోజనము.
English Translation: Serving a ruler who neither welcomes you warmly nor dismisses you clearly brings neither livelihood nor fulfillment. It is as pointless as playing dice in a pitch-dark room.

రూపించి పలికి బొంకకు,
ప్రాపగు చుట్టంబు నెగ్గు పలుకకు మదిలో,
గోపించు రాజు గొల్వకు,
పాపపు దేశంబు సొఱకు పదిలము సుమతీ!
భావం: సాక్షుల మూలముగా నిర్ధారణ చేసి అబద్ధమును నిజమని స్థిరపరచుట, ఆప్తబంధువులను నిందించుట, కోపినిని సేవించుట పాపభూమికి వెళ్ళుట ఇవి తగని పనులు. కాన ఈ విషయములలో జాగ్రత్త వహింపుడు.
English Translation: Do not swear falsely to validate an untruth; do not harbor malice against close kin who support you; do not serve a hot-tempered ruler; and do not step into a lawless land.

లావుగలవాని కంటెను
భావింపగ నీతిపరుడు బలవంతుండౌ
గ్రావంబంత గజంబును
మావటివాడెక్కినట్లు మహిలో సుమతీ!
భావం: పెద్ద పర్వతమంతటి ఏనుగుకంటెను చిన్నవాడైననూ మావటివాడు అట్టిదానిని లోగొని ఎక్కుచున్నాడు కావున గొప్పవాడు. అట్లే శరీరబలము కలవానికంటే బుద్ధిబలము కలవాడె నిజముగా బలవంతుడు.
English Translation: A person of wisdom and tact is far more powerful than one with mere muscle. A small mahout commands and mounts a mountain-sized elephant through intellect, not brute force.

వఱదైన చేను దున్నకు,
కఱవైనను బంధుజనుల కడ కేగకుమీ,
పరులకు మర్మము చెప్పకు,
పిరికికి దళవాయి తనము పెట్టకు సుమతీ!
భావం: వరద ముంచిన చేనును దున్నకుము, కూడు కఱవైనను బంధువుల దగ్గరకు పోకుము. ఇతరులకు రహస్యమును తెలుపకుము. పిఱికివానికి సేనానాయక పదవిని ఇయ్యకుము.
English Translation: Do not plow a field submerged in floodwater; do not turn to relatives for charity in times of famine; do not disclose your vulnerabilities to strangers; and never grant army command to a coward.

వరిపంట లేని యూరును,
దొర యుండని యూరు, తోడు దొరకని తెరువున్‌,
ధరను పతి లేని గృహమును
నరయంగా రుద్రభూమి యనదగు సుమతీ!
భావం: ధాన్యము పంటలేని గ్రామమును , రాజు వసియింపని నగరమును, సహాయము దొరకని మార్గమును, భర్త (రాజు) లేని గృహమూ ఆలోచింపగా స్మశానముతో సమానమని చెప్పవచ్చును.
English Translation: A village without food crops, a town without a righteous protector, a deserted road without a companion, and a household without a responsible head are all akin to a desolate cremation ground.

వినదగు నెవ్వరు జెప్పిన
వినినంతనె వేగ పడక వివరింప దగున్‌
కని కల్ల నిజము దెలిసిన
మనుజుడె పో నీతిపరుడు మహిలో సుమతీ!
భావం: ఎవరేమి చెప్పినప్పటికిని వినవచ్చును. వినిన తక్షణమే తొందరపడక బాగుగా పరిశీలన చేయవలెను. అట్లు పరిశీలన చేసి కల్ల నిజములను తెలుసుకొనిన మనుజుడె ధర్మాత్ముడు.
English Translation: Listen carefully to whoever speaks, but never act in hasty impulse. He who discerns falsehood from genuine truth through careful inquiry is the truly righteous person in this world.

వీడెము సేయని నోరును,
జేడెల యధరామృతంబు సేయని నోరున్‌,
పాడంగరాని నోరును
బూడిద కిరవైన పాడు బొందర సుమతీ!
భావం: తాంబూలమును వేసుకొనని, స్త్రీల యధరామృతమును పానము చేయని, గానము చేయని నోరు పెంటబూడిద పోసుకొనెడి గోయి సుమా.
English Translation: A mouth that does not chew betel leaf, that never tastes sweet romantic affection, and that cannot sing or recite is merely a miserable pit fit for dumping cold ashes.

వెలయాలి వలన గూరిమి
గలగదు, మఱి గలిగెనేని కడతేఱదుగా;
బలువురు నడచెడు తెరువున
మొలవదు పువు, మొలిచెనేని పొదలదు సుమతీ!
భావం: పెక్కురు నడిచెడి మార్గమునందు పచ్చగడ్డి మొలవదు. ఒకవేళ మొలిచినను వృద్ధినొందదు. ఆ విధముగనే వేశ్యవలన ప్రేమ లభింపదు. ఒకవేళ లభించినను చాలా కాలము నిలువదు.
English Translation: True affection does not blossom from a courtesan, and even if it seems to, it will not last. Fresh grass does not sprout on a heavily trodden path, and even if it does, it will never flourish.

వెలయాలు చేయు బాసలు,
వెలయగ మొగసాల బొందు వెలమల చెలిమిన్‌,
గలలోన గన్న కలిమియు
విలసితముగ నమ్మరాదు వినరా సుమతీ!
భావం: వేశ్యా ప్రమాణములును, విశ్వబ్రాహ్మణుని స్నేహమును, వెలమదొరల జతయు, కలలో చూసిన సంపదయు, స్పష్టముగా నమ్మరాదు.
English Translation: The promises of a courtesan, companionship with an artisan, friendship with opportunistic feudal chiefs, and riches seen in a dream can never be relied upon as genuine.

వేసరపు జాతి గానీ,
వీసము దా జేయనట్టి వీరిడి గానీ,
దాసి కొడుకైన గానీ,
కాసులు గల వాడె రాజు గదరా సుమతీ!
భావం: నీచ జాతి వాడైనను, కొంచమైనను చేయలేని నిష్ప్రయోజకుడైనను, దాసీపుత్రుడైనను ధనము గలవాడే యధిపతి.
English Translation: Be he of humble origin, a simpleton incapable of earning a small penny, or born of a servant woman—he who possesses abundant money is hailed as king in this world.

శుభముల పొందని చదువును,
నభినయముగ రాగరసము నందని పాటల్‌,
గుభ గుభలు లేని కూటమి,
సభ మెచ్చని మాటలెల్ల జప్పన సుమతీ
భావం: మంగళములను పొందని విద్యయును, నటనముతోడను, సంగీత సామరస్యముతోడను కూడిన పాటలును, సందడులులేని కలయికయును, సభలయందు మెప్పును పొందని మాటలును, రుచివంతములు కావు. (చప్పనైనవి)
English Translation: Learning that yields no auspicious purpose, songs devoid of expressive feeling and melody, intimacy without passion and mirth, and speech unappreciated by an assembly are all flat and tasteless.

సరసము విరసము కొఱకే,
పరిపూర్ణ సుఖంబు లధిక బాధల కొఱకే,
పెరుగుట విరుగుట కొఱకే,
ధర తగ్గుట హెచ్చు కొఱకె తథ్యము సుమతీ!
భావం: హాస్యపు మాటలు విరోధముకొరకే, సంపూర్ణమైన సౌఖ్యములు విస్తారమైన బాధలకే, పొడవుగా ఎదుగుట విరిగిపోవుటకే, ధరవరులు ఎక్కువగా తగ్గుట మరల అభివృద్ధి పొందుటకొరకేనని మనుజుడు తెలుసుకొనవలయును.
English Translation: Humor carried too far leads to bitter conflict; excessive indulgence in pleasure gives rise to great pain; rapid growth precedes a fall; and falling prices eventually rise again. Such is the cyclical nature of life.

సిరి తా వచ్చిన వచ్చును
సరళముగ నారికేళ సలిలము భంగిన్‌,
సిరి తా బోయిన బోవును
కరి మ్రింగిన వెలగ పండు కరణిని సుమతీ!
భావం: సంపద కలిగినప్పుడు కొబ్బరికాయలోనికి నీరువచ్చిన విధముగనే రమ్యముగా కలుగును. సంపద పోయినపుడు ఏనుగు మ్రింగిన వెలగపండులోని గుంజు మాయమగు విధముగనే మాయమైపోవును.
English Translation: Wealth arrives smoothly and naturally like sweet water gathering inside a growing coconut; but when it departs, it vanishes mysteriously, like the pulp inside a wood-apple swallowed whole by an elephant.

స్త్రీల యెడ వాదులాడకు,
బాలురతో జెలిమిచేసి భాషింపకుమీ,
మేలైన గుణము విడువకు,
మేలిన పతి నింద సేయ కెన్నడు సుమతీ!
