Bhartruhari Subhashitalu: Moral Guide for Indians for several centuries
Updated: Oct 5

Bhartruhari Subhashitalu in Telugu (also known as Subhashita Trishati) is a renowned collection of Sanskrit aphorisms composed by the ancient poet and philosopher Bhartruhari. Bhartruhari was a seminal 5th-to-7th century Indian philosopher, grammarian, and Sanskrit poet whose intellectual contributions heavily shaped ancient Indian thought. He is unique in history for excelling simultaneously in strict linguistic philosophy and deeply emotional, relatable poetry.

English Translation: Those capable of understanding are tainted by jealousy; rulers are blinded by pride; others are shrouded in ignorance. Hence, this wise counsel remains undigested within myself. It is easy to satisfy an ignorant person, and far easier to please a true scholar; but not even Brahma, the creator, can please a person arrogant with a mere fraction of knowledge.
