HYDERABAD: A major redevelopment of the historic Sri Sita Ramachandra Swamy temple at Bhadrachalam is underway as the Telangana government prepares the prominent pilgrimage centre for the 2027 Godavari Pushkaralu, with work covering the temple complex, river ghats and surrounding infrastructure.

Restoration work formally began in late June with Vedic rituals conducted in accordance with Agama traditions, according to The New Indian Express. The newspaper reported that the state government had sanctioned Rs 540 crore for redevelopment of the temple and its surrounding Mada streets, and that works valued at about Rs 200 crore had begun.

The June launch followed a bhoomi puja attended by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy during the annual Sri Sita Rama Kalyana Mahotsavam in Bhadrachalam on March 27.

The project is part of a broader effort to redevelop Bhadrachalam as a major spiritual and pilgrimage destination while retaining the religious character of one of Telangana's most important Rama temples.

Earlier, the state government had granted Rs 351 crore in administrative sanction for the first phase of the redevelopment. Endowments Minister Konda Surekha said Rs 75 crore was intended for expansion and development of the Godavari ghat, Rs 180 crore for the temple complex and Rs 96 crore for development of the temple precincts and surrounding infrastructure.

The development program is also closely tied to preparations for the next Godavari Pushkaralu, scheduled in Telangana from June 26 to July 7, 2027.

Importantly for devotees, authorities have said regular worship will continue while construction is underway. Daily rituals, pujas and darshan are expected to continue, with officials instructed to manage queues, drinking water, sanitation and security during the work.

For Telugu families living in the United States, Bhadrachalam remains an important cultural and religious connection to Telangana. The current redevelopment has added significance because the 2027 Godavari Pushkaralu are expected to bring exceptionally large pilgrim flows to the Godavari region, including visitors travelling to India from overseas.
