VIJAYAWADA: Andhra Pradesh has begun a Rs 6.3-crore restoration and development programme at the historic Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple in Mangalagiri

, with work planned on the Sri Krishnadevaraya Mandapam and other structures while authorities prepare a broader master plan for the pilgrimage centre.

Education, HRD and IT Minister Nara Lokesh formally launched the project on July 3, 2026, performing the Bhoomi Puja and unveiling a plaque marking commencement of the works. The package announced when work commenced was valued at Rs 6.3 crore, provided through the Endowments Department fund.

The works include construction of a new Yagasala, reconstruction of the Vahana Mandapam and Ghanta Mandapam, and restoration of the historic Sri Krishnadevaraya Mandapam. Lokesh directed officials to ensure that the work respects the temple's traditional architecture and religious customs.

After launching the works, Lokesh instructed officials to prepare a comprehensive master plan for the long-term development of the temple. The proposed plan is expected to address pilgrim amenities as well as preservation of the shrine's architectural and religious character.

Mangalagiri is one of Andhra Pradesh's important centres of Narasimha worship. The Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple undergoing the current restoration is located at the foot of Mangalagiri hill. It should not be confused with the famous Panakala Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple higher on the hill.

Mangalagiri's location within the rapidly developing Amaravati-Vijayawada-Guntur urban region gives the restoration a broader significance. Lokesh specifically instructed officials to minimise inconvenience to pilgrims during construction.

For Telugu people living in the United States, Mangalagiri is already a familiar religious destination, particularly for families visiting the Vijayawada, Guntur and Amaravati region. With the July 3 Bhoomi Puja completed, restoration and development of the historic temple complex have formally entered the implementation stage.
