Two Major Hyderabad Links Open as Flyover Works Reshape Traffic in City

HYDERABAD: Hyderabad has opened two major road links within days of each other — a new high-level bridge across the Musi at Moosarambagh and the long-awaited Chanchalguda–Santosh Nagar steel flyover — promising relief on heavily congested eastern and southern corridors even as large-scale flyover construction elsewhere is creating new traffic bottlenecks.


Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy inaugurated the Moosarambagh High-Level Bridge on August 31, connecting the Amberpet side of the Musi with the Moosarambagh-Dilsukhnagar corridor. The Telangana government says the 400-metre structure was built at a cost of ₹52 crore.


Just three days later, on September 3, Revanth Reddy opened the Nalgonda X Roads steel flyover, the elevated corridor running through Chanchalguda, Saidabad and IS Sadan toward Santosh Nagar and Owaisi Hospital Junction. The project is about 3.32 km long and cost approximately ₹620 crore, according to the latest project details released before its opening.


Together, the two projects address very different traffic problems.


Moosarambagh bridge gives motorists a more reliable Musi crossing


The Moosarambagh project replaces dependence on a low-level crossing that had repeatedly become vulnerable when the Musi carried heavy flood flows. In previous years, rising river levels periodically forced closures, disrupting movement between Amberpet and the Malakpet-Dilsukhnagar side of the city.


The new high-level bridge is therefore intended to do more than shorten journeys on normal days. By providing an elevated all-weather crossing, it should reduce the risk that traffic on this route is cut off during periods of high Musi flows.


It is also expected to ease some pressure on the Chaderghat crossing and provide another option for motorists travelling between Amberpet, Moosarambagh, Malakpet and Dilsukhnagar.


The government officially lists the completed project as 400 metres long and costing ₹52 crore.


Chanchalguda-Santosh Nagar flyover targets one of south Hyderabad's major choke points


The bigger immediate traffic intervention is the steel flyover stretching from the Nalgonda X Roads-Chanchalguda area toward Santosh Nagar.


The four-lane elevated corridor has 88 spans and provides a largely signal-free connection toward Owaisi Hospital Junction, bypassing congested junctions around Chanchalguda, Saidabad and IS Sadan.


Officials have estimated that a trip taking about 35 minutes during congestion could fall to roughly five to eight minutes once traffic settles into the new arrangement — a potential saving of close to half an hour. That is an official projection rather than a measured post-opening travel-time study.


The new flyover is particularly significant because the surface corridor carries dense local traffic in addition to vehicles moving between the Old City, Saidabad, Santosh Nagar and the eastern parts of Hyderabad.


By allowing through-traffic to pass above several junctions, planners expect fewer signal stops, less idling and reduced conflict between local and longer-distance traffic. Hyderabad in-charge minister Ponnam Prabhakar has said the corridor should also reduce fuel consumption and vehicle emissions caused by prolonged idling.


Relief in one part of Hyderabad, construction pain in another


The two openings come as Hyderabad is in the middle of a much broader cycle of grade-separator construction.


The most disruptive current work is around KBR Park, Jubilee Hills and Banjara Hills, where the Hyderabad City Innovative and Transformative Infrastructure, or H-CITI, program is building a network of flyovers and underpasses.


The ₹1,090-crore KBR Park package envisages seven flyovers and seven underpasses around major junctions including Jubilee Hills Check Post, KBR Park Entrance, Mugdha Junction, Road No. 45, Film Nagar and Maharaja Agrasen Junction. The works are expected to continue for roughly two years.


The scale of construction has already altered everyday driving.


Hyderabad Traffic Police introduced a one-way system around KBR Park from August 18 after concluding that construction was taking up about 45% of the available road space, leaving insufficient carriageway for normal two-way traffic at existing volumes.


The impact is especially important for people commuting between central Hyderabad and the western IT corridor.


Traffic-police survey data cited in reporting on the project put the peak-hour load at Jubilee Hills Check Post at 15,321 passenger car units per hour, followed by KBR Park Entrance at 13,516. Road No. 45, Film Nagar and Agrasen Junction also handle substantial peak-hour volumes.


That explains the central challenge facing the city: the projects are intended to remove bottlenecks in the long term, but construction itself reduces road capacity at already overloaded junctions.


Gachibowli and Khajaguda also under construction


Large-scale work is also underway in the western technology corridor.


At IIIT Junction, authorities are constructing a multi-level grade separator that includes multiple flyovers and an underpass connecting movements toward Gachibowli, Lingampally, DLF Road and ISB Road.


At nearby Khajaguda Junction, a flyover and underpass are also under construction. The Cyberabad Municipal Corporation said in July that the IIIT Junction works were targeted for completion in 2027, with the Khajaguda project on a similar timetable.


More than 30% of the civil work at the IIIT-Khajaguda sites had been completed by mid-August, according to municipal officials, with excavation largely finished and pillar construction progressing.


The construction has required significant traffic diversions around IIIT Junction, directly affecting commuters travelling through one of Hyderabad's busiest employment corridors.


Uppal corridor remains another major test


On Hyderabad's eastern side, work is continuing on the long-delayed Uppal-Narapally elevated corridor.


Roads and Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy said in August that the government wanted the project completed by Dasara 2026 and ordered the contractor to accelerate work, including additional shifts. The corridor has been a prolonged source of congestion for motorists using the Uppal-Narapally stretch.


The project is about 6.25 km long and was conceived to decongest the urban section of the Hyderabad-Warangal/NH-163 corridor.

The result is an unusual phase for Hyderabad motorists.


New infrastructure at Moosarambagh and Chanchalguda-Santosh Nagar is beginning to remove long-standing choke points, while construction around KBR Park, Gachibowli, Khajaguda and Uppal is simultaneously making some other commutes more difficult.


If the newly opened corridors perform as designed, the Chanchalguda flyover should have the most immediately visible effect by separating through-traffic from busy surface junctions, while the Moosarambagh bridge provides a more reliable connection across the Musi and reduces dependence on other crossings.


The larger impact, however, will depend on what happens when the H-CITI projects are completed. Hyderabad's traffic problems increasingly involve entire corridors rather than isolated junctions, and the current strategy is shifting toward interconnected flyovers, underpasses and signal-free routes rather than individual standalone structures.


For Hyderabad residents — and Telugu families abroad who regularly return to a rapidly expanding city — the changes are likely to be visible from one visit to the next: some familiar bottlenecks are disappearing, while several of the city's busiest roads are effectively construction zones as the next generation of elevated corridors takes shape.
