Kamal Haasan and director Shankar are gearing up for Indian 3, the much anticipated third instalment in the Indian franchise. The 1996 original, Indian, emerged as a major success and became a trendsetter, with Kamal Haasan's portrayal of freedom fighter Senapathy, who fights corruption, becoming iconic.

However, Indian 2, released nearly three decades later, failed to meet audience expectations at the box office. Although the makers offered a glimpse of Indian 3 towards the end of the second instalment, the disappointing response to Indian 2 led many to believe that the third part might never materialise. Recent reports of the makers officially confirming the project have now revived interest among fans.

Despite the setback of Indian 2, expectations for Indian 3 remain encouraging, largely because of the visuals shown at the end of the previous film. The third instalment is reportedly set against a rural backdrop, featuring rugged locations and a vintage look.

According to reports, the film will explore Senapathy's origins, his past and his heroic battles against the British during the freedom struggle. This historical storyline is said to be one of the major attractions of the upcoming film.

Meanwhile, an interesting update regarding the film's release is doing the rounds in industry circles. The makers are reportedly considering releasing Indian 3 in March or April 2027.

However, the proposed release window could put the film in competition with two major projects. Prabhas and director Sandeep Reddy Vanga's pan India film Spirit is scheduled for release in March 2027.
