VIJAYAWADA/HYDERABAD: A fresh weather system could develop over the Bay of Bengal around mid-October, potentially influencing rainfall over Andhra Pradesh, while its possible impact on neighboring Telangana remains uncertain at this stage.

A Vijayawada weather report citing meteorological authorities said a low-pressure area could form near the Andaman region around October 12 and subsequently develop further over the Bay of Bengal.

However, the system has not yet formed, and its eventual strength, direction and landfall area cannot be determined this far in advance. Those factors will decide whether its influence remains concentrated over coastal Andhra Pradesh or extends inland toward Telangana.

What Could It Mean for Telangana?

Bay of Bengal systems can bring significant rainfall to Telangana when they cross the Andhra Pradesh coast and subsequently move west or northwest over land. The extent of any rainfall in Telangana from the anticipated mid-October system will therefore depend heavily on its eventual track.

At present, IMD has not issued a heavy-rain warning for Telangana connected to the possible October 12–13 system.

IMD's current subdivision forecast, issued October 2, carries no weather warning for Telangana on October 2–4, thunderstorm and lightning warnings for October 5 and 6, and no warning for October 7 and 8.

The department's extended-range material covers the period through October 14, but forecasts at that range should not be interpreted as confirmation of the eventual track of a weather system that has yet to form.

Hyderabad Impact Cannot Yet Be Predicted

It is consequently too early to say whether Hyderabad will receive heavy rain from the anticipated system.

If a depression eventually crosses the Andhra Pradesh coast and follows a westward or northwesterly path, Telangana could receive increased cloud cover, thunderstorms and rainfall as the system or its remnants move inland.

If it takes a different track, Telangana's impact could be limited.

A more reliable assessment of Hyderabad and district-level rainfall will become possible only after the low-pressure area develops and IMD establishes its likely trajectory.

Andhra Pradesh Could Be Closer to the System

Andhra Pradesh would be geographically closer to a Bay of Bengal system approaching India's east coast, making its evolution particularly important for coastal districts.

The Vijayawada report said thunderstorms and rain were already expected at isolated locations in coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema.

The report also said a new low-pressure area could emerge around October 12 near the Andaman region before potentially strengthening. However, it cautioned that the system's eventual direction remained uncertain.

Telangana Coming Off a Below-Normal Monsoon

Telangana, meanwhile, ended the 2026 southwest monsoon with rainfall below its long-period average.

A report citing IMD data said Telangana recorded an 18% rainfall deficit during the 2026 southwest monsoon, although that departure still placed the state within IMD's “normal” rainfall category.

That makes any significant post-monsoon rainfall important for reservoirs, agriculture and soil moisture, although intense rainfall over short periods can also create flooding and waterlogging problems.

For now, residents of both Telugu states should distinguish between the possibility of a weather system developing around October 12–13 and a confirmed forecast of a depression, cyclone or heavy rainfall.

Whether Telangana — including Hyderabad — receives substantial rain will become clearer only after the system forms and its track can be assessed.
