Srisailam Reservoir Sees Little to No Inflow as Water Levels Remain Under Pressure

Srisailam: The Srisailam reservoir on the Krishna River is receiving little to no fresh inflow, raising concerns over water availability for irrigation and power generation in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.


According to reservoir officials, the water level at Srisailam was around 864.60 feet, with storage estimated at approximately 120.95 TMC. The reservoir has a gross storage capacity of about 215.8 TMC when full.


The situation has been closely watched because Srisailam serves as a major source of water for several irrigation systems and hydroelectric power facilities in both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.


Power generation continues on Telangana side


With inflows remaining weak, water is being drawn for power generation. Telangana's left-bank hydropower station was using water at a rate of about 41,075 cusecs, according to the reported figures.


Power generation on the Andhra Pradesh side, meanwhile, was not taking place at the time of the report.


The low inflow means that continued withdrawals from the reservoir could further affect available storage if substantial rainfall does not improve flows into the Krishna basin.


Why Srisailam inflows matter


Srisailam receives water from upstream areas of the Krishna basin, including flows through the Jurala and Sunkesula systems as well as rainfall in the reservoir's catchment.


Weak inflows can affect the timing and availability of water releases for downstream irrigation projects. The reservoir is also an important component of the region's hydropower system.


The current situation therefore remains dependent on rainfall and upstream inflows in the coming days.

The Srisailam reservoir is particularly important for communities and farmers dependent on Krishna River water in the two Telugu states. Changes in reservoir storage can influence irrigation releases, drinking-water planning and hydropower operations.
