Mahakaleshwar Temple, Ujjain
The Mahakaleshwar Temple at Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. Shiva is worshipped here as Mahakala—the Lord of Time and Death. The shrine is particularly noted for its south-facing, or dakshinamukhi, Jyotirlinga and the celebrated Bhasma Aarti.
Sthala Mahatmyam
Traditional accounts describe Ujjain, ancient Avantika, as being threatened by a demon, whereupon Shiva appeared in his terrifying Mahakala form in response to the prayers of his devotees and destroyed the evil force. At their request, he remained in Ujjain as Mahakaleshwar. The deeper symbolism is powerful: since Kala means time and Mahakala is the master of time itself, worship here represents seeking refuge in that which transcends birth, death and temporal existence.
Getting there
Fly into Indore (IDR) via a major Indian international gateway, then take a car, bus or train to Ujjain, commonly 1–2 hours by road. Ujjain Junction has train links; from the station take an auto-rickshaw or taxi to the designated temple approach. Arrive the prior evening for any early-morning aarti.
Darshan, booking and time on site
Ordinary darshan, Sheeghra Darshan and Bhasma Aarti are distinct. The Temple Management Committee offers online bookings for Bhasma Aarti, other aartis, puja and accommodation. Bhasma Aarti is at dawn, subject to ID, reporting and clothing instructions on the ticket. Confirm the actual entry gate and current dress rules after booking; do not purchase a purported guaranteed pass from an intermediary.
Allow at least half a day for the shrine and local transfers, and considerably longer on festival days. Check the official temple source just before setting out; queues, hours, clothing requirements and security rules may change without much notice. A room reservation is not a darshan entitlement.
Dos and don’ts

Wear conservative clothing, remove footwear and leave electronic items as security directs. Follow the assigned lane; some ritual areas have stricter access. Do not carry large bags, insist on a specific viewing position, or photograph restricted rites. In summer, carry drinking water for the wait outside.
Do: Carry only essential ID and small cash; arrive before any ticket reporting time; follow staff and posted signs; use official counters and ask for receipts; keep your hotel address in writing.
Don’t: Push in queues, photograph where prohibited, pay brokers for “VIP” access, leave valuables unattended, litter or assume that a visitor of another faith has the same access rules at every temple.
Before leaving your country
- Check passport validity and the visa or e-visa rules that apply to your nationality on India’s official visa portal. Keep your entry documents accessible. An OCI holder should carry the OCI document and linked passport.
- Book flights, a hotel and onward transport with time for delays. Temple bookings are separate from travel bookings. Keep an offline copy of confirmations and the original ID used for any temple reservation.
- Indian currency is the rupee (INR). Carry some small-denomination cash; a foreign card or overseas UPI account may not work at every counter. Obtain a local data connection or roaming and save offline maps.
- Wear comfortable clothing that covers shoulders and knees; carry a light scarf, socks for hot stone floors, drinking water and any regular medication. Store shoes and belongings only at staffed or clearly marked facilities.
