Dwarkadhish (Jagat Mandir), Dwarka

The Dwarkadhish Temple at Dwarka in Gujarat, also called Jagat Mandir, is dedicated to Krishna as the King of Dwarka. Dwarka is one of the four principal Char Dham pilgrimage centres and one of the traditional Sapta Puri, the seven sacred cities associated with liberation.

Sthala Mahatmyam

According to the Mahabharata and later sacred traditions, Krishna moved his kingdom from Mathura to the western coast and established the magnificent city of Dvaraka. After Krishna's departure from the earthly world, the ancient city is traditionally said to have been submerged by the sea. The present sacred landscape preserves the memory of Krishna not principally as the child of Gokul, but as Dwarkadhish—the statesman, king and Lord of Dwarka.

Getting there

Fly internationally to Ahmedabad (AMD) or Mumbai (BOM); connect by train to Dwarka railway station, or via Jamnagar/Rajkot airport and a long road transfer. From Dwarka station use a local taxi or auto-rickshaw to the temple’s pedestrian approaches. Stay overnight if combining the main shrine with Gomti Ghat, Rukmini Devi Temple or Beyt Dwarka; the latter needs additional road/bridge travel.

Darshan, booking and time on site

The old-city temple has morning and evening darshan sessions interrupted for worship and offerings. Confirm the day’s timetable locally, especially around Janmashtami and Ekadashi. Use official counters for any available puja or offerings; third-party sites using a temple-like name are not necessarily the shrine authority.

Allow at least half a day for the shrine and local transfers, and considerably longer on festival days. Check the official temple source just before setting out; queues, hours, clothing requirements and security rules may change without much notice. A room reservation is not a darshan entitlement.

Dos and don’ts

Remove shoes and follow the queue. Expect restrictions on phones/cameras and on carrying large bags; check the staffed deposit point before joining the line. Dress conservatively, respect worship at Gomti Ghat, and avoid bathing in unsafe water or paying unsolicited “guides” for promised priority entry.

Do: carry only essential ID and small cash; arrive before any ticket reporting time; follow staff and posted signs; use official counters and ask for receipts; keep your hotel address in writing.

Don’t: push in queues, photograph where prohibited, pay brokers for “VIP” access, leave valuables unattended, litter or assume that a visitor of another faith has the same access rules at every temple.

Before leaving your country

- Check passport validity and the visa or e-visa rules that apply to your nationality on India’s official visa portal. Keep your entry documents accessible. An OCI holder should carry the OCI document and linked passport.

- Book flights, a hotel and onward transport with time for delays. Temple bookings are separate from travel bookings. Keep an offline copy of confirmations and the original ID used for any temple reservation.

- Indian currency is the rupee (INR). Carry some small-denomination cash; a foreign card or overseas UPI account may not work at every counter. Obtain a local data connection or roaming and save offline maps.

- Wear comfortable clothing that covers shoulders and knees; carry a light scarf, socks for hot stone floors, drinking water and any regular medication. Store shoes and belongings only at staffed or clearly marked facilities.

Contacts and emergency plan

For current temple contacts and timings, ask Gujarat Tourism’s official visitor information service or the temple counter; a trustworthy temple-specific phone could not be confirmed for this edition. India emergency: 112.

Across India, dial 112 for emergency assistance. Save your own embassy/consulate emergency contact, insurer and hotel number. Indian local and toll-free numbers may not connect from abroad; call once in India or use the official website. Numbers and schedules can change: verify them before publication and again before departure.
