Dhanteras: Honoring Health, Prosperity and Thoughtful Stewardship
Updated: Oct 9

Dhanteras, or Dhanatrayodashi, opens the Deepavali festive sequence in many regions. It is associated with Lakshmi and Kubera worship and with Dhanvantari, the divine physician who appears in the churning-of-the-ocean narrative carrying the vessel of amrita. The celebration links prosperity with health, care, and responsible household management.
Preparing for the day
Families clean the home and arrange lamps, flowers, fruit, and sweets. Some purchase a utensil or a small precious-metal item as an auspicious token. Shopping is a popular custom, not a requirement to spend beyond one's means.
Worship and lamps
Household worship may honor Lakshmi and Kubera in the evening, with Ganesha worship first. Dhanvantari worship can be held separately or incorporated according to family practice. A short explanation of his amrita vessel helps children understand why the day is linked with healing.
Some families observe Yama Deepam, lighting a lamp as a prayer associated with Yama and protection from untimely death.
A wider understanding of wealth
The day can be used to thank healthcare workers, donate to a community health initiative, or organize household medicines and appointments. These are modern ways of giving practical expression to the association with health. Telugu Americans may know Dhanteras mainly through the broader Indian community's celebrations.
