Deepavali Lakshmi Puja: Inviting Light and Auspiciousness into the Home
Updated: Oct 9

Lakshmi Puja is a central part of Deepavali for many Hindu households. Lamps brighten the home while the family prays for sustenance, harmony, and prosperity. The celebration presents wealth as something to be cared for and shared, alongside the inner qualities that make a household welcoming.
Cleaning and arranging the altar
Clean the house and worship area, draw a muggu or rangoli, and arrange Lakshmi's image with Ganesha. A lamp, flowers, fruit, turmeric, kumkum, akshata, water, and a sweet offering form a basic set of materials. Coins or account books are placed near the altar in some homes and businesses.
A common household sequence
After bathing and making the sankalpam, worship Ganesha first. Invoke Lakshmi through the family's prayer text, offer flowers with her names, and recite Sri Suktam if a qualified reciter is available. Offer naivedyam, perform harati, and share prasadam.
Lamps, family and hospitality
Light diyas in stable locations away from curtains and children's play areas. Electric lights can supplement or replace exposed flames where housing rules require it.
For Telugu Americans, invite children to help with rangoli and learn one Lakshmi prayer. A donation or invitation to someone spending the holiday alone expresses prosperity as generosity.
