Andhra Graduate Killed in Ohio Crash After Pickup Crosses Highway Median
Kent State alumnus Dileep Kumar Bungatavula dies in I-480 collision; NATS launches fundraiser for farmer’s family in Andhra Pradesh
CLEVELAND: A young Telugu software professional from Andhra Pradesh was killed in a horrific highway crash in northeast Ohio after a pickup truck travelling in the opposite direction crossed the median and slammed into the car in which he was travelling.
The victim, Dileep Kumar Bungatavula, a computer science graduate of Kent State University, died in the crash on Interstate 480 in Macedonia, a suburb in the Cleveland metropolitan area, on the night of Friday, August 7.
According to Macedonia police, Police, Fire and EMS personnel were called at about 9.42 p.m. to I-480 eastbound near mile marker 32.6 following reports of a crash with injuries. First responders found that a pickup truck and a sedan had been involved in the collision.
A preliminary investigation indicated that the pickup, which had been travelling westbound, crossed the centre median and collided with the eastbound sedan. One person was pronounced dead at the scene. Three others were taken to area hospitals, with CPR administered to one of them, while another occupant was evaluated and cleared at the scene. Police have so far not officially released the identities of those involved.
The Summit County Crash Investigation Team is investigating the circumstances that caused the pickup to leave the westbound lanes and cross the median. The highway remained closed for several hours and reopened at about 1.30 a.m. on Saturday.
The North America Telugu Society (NATS) subsequently identified the deceased as Dileep Kumar Bungatavula and launched a community fundraising effort to assist his family in India.
From Rayalaseema to Kent State
Dileep hailed from Jettivaripalli in Chitvel mandal in Andhra Pradesh's Rayalaseema region. Chitvel currently falls in Annamayya district, according to the Andhra Pradesh government's district administration records.
His father, Sreehari Bungatavula, is a farmer, and Dileep's parents and brother live in India, according to NATS. The organisation said his family had made considerable financial sacrifices to support his higher education in the United States.
Records reviewed by this publication show that Dileep had built his academic career around computer science.
Before coming to the United States, Bungatavula Dileep Kumar studied Computer Science Engineering at Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Viswa Mahavidyalaya (SCSVMV), a deemed-to-be university near Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu. The university's official records list him among its Computer Science Engineering students. Its placement records also show that he received campus employment offers from Cognizant and Wipro.
He subsequently moved to the United States for graduate studies at Kent State University in Ohio.
Contrary to some initial reports describing him simply as a Kent State student, the university's official commencement records show that Dileep had already completed his Master of Science in Computer Science. He was listed among the graduates of Kent State's College of Arts and Sciences at the commencement held on May 8, 2025.
His publicly available professional profile described him as a software engineer and full-stack developer with an interest in cloud technologies, and listed Cognizant among his professional experience.
Thus, the August 7 crash brought to an abrupt end a journey that had taken the son of a farmer from a small Rayalaseema village through an engineering education in India to a master's degree and technology career in the United States.
Community Rallies Around Family
NATS said Dileep's death has also left his family facing substantial financial commitments, including outstanding educational and personal loans. The organisation said money raised would be used towards those obligations, the family's immediate needs and financial support for his parents.
A GoFundMe campaign organised by NATS North America Telugu Society had raised more than $33,000 from nearly 600 donations by Sunday, August 9, towards a $100,000 goal, reflecting a rapid response from the Indian-American community. The amount was continuing to change as contributions came in.
The tragedy has once again shaken Telugu communities in the United States, particularly students and young professionals whose families remain thousands of miles away in India.
Meanwhile, Ohio authorities have not yet announced what caused the pickup truck to cross the median or whether speed, impairment, distraction or any other factor contributed to the collision. The police investigation remains under way, and no such cause should be assumed until investigators release their findings.
